Washington dispatch reports the American battleship fleet now in the Red Sea may be ordered to Sicily to aid survivors of the Italy earthquake. Officials near a decision consult today as ships scheduled to enter the Mediterranean by January 5 could land 12,000 marines. Greatest need is men and ships for relief.
The U S fleet is due to arrive near Messina around January 3 after transiting Suez and entering the Mediterranean by January 5. Ships will hurry to the stricken area to evacuate the injured and homeless, explore ruins, police towns, and assist sanitary work. Admiral Sperry will land at least 12,000 men to aid relief. The Scorpion is ordered to Messina and the Celtic sails for Italy with 6000 tons of supplies.
Supt A M Ivey in La Crosse appealed for materiel to feed 200 poor guests invited by the City Mission for New Year’s dinner tomorrow. He noted the shortage would not only disappoint the workers but most of all the hungry attendees awaiting the meal.
