Four year old Johnny McDonald accompanied by his father John McDonald of 316 S 2nd St La Crescent attended the auto show opening day in the auditorium Fri day. The photographer followed the child for a while.
The three day La Crosse Auto Show began at noon in the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium featuring 30 cars on display and 2,500 advance tickets sold. Show chair Carl Schneider reported 537 attendees on opening day with daily stage attractions and performances by Ferlin Husky and Frank Fontaine.
Authorities probing the juke box operator Anthony Biernat disappearance learned he talked about a crime story the night he was abducted but cannot account for 1 hour 45 minutes. Sheriff Chartier said the hours 7 15 to 9 p m on Jan 7 are a major question in the case.
Dan T. Perkins Jr. and James A. Semora face additional robbery counts tied to the January 19 theft at the Ivory Tower Motel in Hopkinsville and the January 25 Holiday Inn robbery in Bowling Green. Police say about $400 was involved, with pistols drawn and multiple arrests following the incidents. Semora is an AWOL Fort Campbell soldier.

Sen Strom Thurmond alleged a large Soviet base in Cuba with ballistic missiles and 30 000 to 40 000 troops in a constituency newsletter. A Pentagon spokesman rejected the figures as inconsistent with U S intelligence while noting no evidence of long range missiles or nuclear warheads in Cuba.
