More than 150 traveling men have signed to attend the Commercial Men’s Banquet to be held tomorrow at the Hotel Stoddard. The Manufacturers' and Jobbers' union organized event expects a record turnout with plates reserved and more signups anticipated, including about 298 local traveling men and additional guests.
Ex senator Patterson, recovering from a beating by F G Bonfils, published his account in the Times News. He says Bonfils threatened to kill him if his name appeared in print. Patterson declares Denver a hotbed of terrorism for blackmailers and gamblers and pledges to continue the fight for a decent city.
Frontier lodge No. 45 F A M and Smith chapter No. 13 R A M and Eastern Star hold installation at the Masonic Temple this evening. A supper for Masons and families follows the business session.
In New York on December 27 authorities had not identified the nude woman found in the Passaic river. A white silk shirt waist was discovered near the boat house close to the suspected crime scene.

The La Crosse County board approved a ten cent per day pay raise for prisoner care at the county jail from forty to fifty cents, by a 27 to 7 vote. They also moved to study a county training school by appointing a five member committee, with petitions from West Salem and neighboring towns backing the plan despite agricultural and domestic science course preferences in district schools. County Superintendent Oltman outlined four similar schools in Wisconsin and noted state aid availability, contingent on local building and site provisions.
In Georgetown on December 27 the defense rested in the Powers trial before noon. The Commonwealth sought a subpoena for the auditor of public accounts to appear tomorrow and disclose how much of the $100,000 defense fund was used, and rebuttal testimony began immediately.
In Lehtbridge Alberta word spread that John Smyth was murdered in a Chinese cafe sparking anti oriental riots. Mobs attacked oriental quarters, smashing buildings while police failed to stop the disturbances and mounted police were deployed to restore order.

Wisconsin Central contemplates legal challenge to the eight hour telegraphers law while Northwestern and St Paul test telephone block wire integration.
Madrid reports that King Alphonse is expected to travel to Latin America next spring. Newspapers discuss the trip as already decided, calling the voyage politically socially and internationally necessary.

Chicago December 27 judge Anderson denied Walsh motion to remove case from the jury in the trial of John R. Walsh former president of the Chicago National Bank.
Chicago December 27 jurors in the Savoy case found Thomas Chalamas not guilty after an eighteen hour deadlock. The bailiff reportedly refused to allow the jurors to receive a dozen bottles of beer late at night, influencing the verdict.
Fred Stutekluh and William Schwier, Barre farmers, pleaded guilty to resisting an officer and were fined $19 and costs each. Emil E. Wenzel, marshal of West Salem, charged that they resisted and fought him on December 9.

Nels Severson sold to Nelvin Severson a Farmington property for four thousand dollars. The transfer records show a straightforward property sale between family members in Farmington.
Miss Wardrop, niece of James Wardrop former superintendent of the New Haven road and heiress in her own right, died at Lincoln hospital after 180 hours in a coma. She was fed through a tube during the long sleep and breathed naturally without weight loss.

James Kirk born in this city has died near Battlesford Canada. Northwest Mounted Police administrator James McKay reports an estate valued at several hundred thousand dollars. A Kirk family line is traced to 1871 living at the corner of Tenth and Grove streets with La Crosse directory ties.
Three inmates tunneled through the jail wall at Fort Sheridan on December 27 overpowered a guard, beat him unconscious, seized his rifle and ammunition, and escaped. The escapees are Ernest Thompson 35 Henry Schaulaub 26 and Walter Dunlay 26.
County Treasurer William Weimar announced the first tax payment arriving from the county. Herman Pralle, treasurer of Campbell, sent in $750 as part of taxes not due until February.
Messrs. P. H. Guhin and W. G. Guhin, proprietors of the Guhin Bros. hotel at Aberdeen, visited friends in La Crosse today while en route from Aberdeen, South Carolina, to Milwaukee to visit relatives for a time.
Federal Judge Anderson adjourned the Walsh case hearing to next Thursday because juror Charles Davey of Oregon Illinois is ill with pneumonia. He is the third juror to fall sick during the trial.

The overdue German cargo vessel R. C. Rickmers, fifty nine days out from Sydney, arrives in San Francisco, after a long voyage was completed.
Dr. Joseph Peasden 48 a leading tetanus expert and Nelson Morris & Co chief chemist in Chicago died at Baptist hospital from lockjaw after a nose fracture at the packing plant. He signaled his condition to his family and doctors and asked for a painless death. He headed the fertilizer and glue departments and was born in Germany.
Passenger train No. 228 on the Jefferson and Franklin branch of the Lake Shore road collided with a light freight engine two miles north of Franklin. The passenger train derailed and both engines were demolished. Fireman William J. Daly of Ashtabula was killed and three crew members injured. Many passengers were slightly hurt.
In Gladstone Michigan on December 27 Ralph Goldsmith aged 14 from Sherman Michigan was shot in the head and killed by his friend Arthur Sweeney aged 15. Sweeney claimed the revolver was unloaded and snapped it for fun using a 38 caliber pistol. The incident occurred during a visit.
Yesterday's national report notes Prince Albert as the coldest with 26 below and San Antonio as warmest at 78. It describes a northwest storm moving east toward the Lake Superior area, high pressure and cold waves north of North Dakota, and a new low in British Columbia.
