Wisconsin Professor Outlines Japan Education Struggles
Wisconsin geographer Glenn T. Trewartha, part of a five-scholar U.S. cultural science mission to Japan, says Japan’s educational system suffers from postwar ghosts and meager salaries that hinder research. He notes low professor pay, lingering fascist-era patterns, and fear of a future return despite some recovery, with Hiroshima and Kyoto universities rebuilding after the atomic bombing. He warns Japan must rely on world markets and foreign support as it seeks economic revival and academic progress.
