Robber Gets 140 At City Gas Station
A robber held up the North Star Station at 9th Street and South Avenue in La Crosse Friday night, taking $140 in cash. Employee Gregory Haniff gave a description of the suspect as about 30, 5 feet 10 inches to six feet tall, clean shaven, in coveralls and a plaid jacket, armed with a small caliber revolver. He arrived and fled on foot toward Green Bay Street.

Sparta Youth Killed Two Injured In Crash
A 15 year old Sparta youth Gordon Rounsaville was killed and two other teens Jack Welcher 17 and David Middleton 15 were seriously injured in a late Friday crash 1.5 miles west of Tomah on Highway 16. The Welcher car went out of control hitting a bridge abutment. Rounsaville’s body was taken to Torkelson Funeral Home Cashton. An inquest decision was pending Saturday noon.

Fire Damages 550 Acres of Medary Land
A fire of undetermined origin swept about 550 acres of Medary marsh and pasture land early Saturday. It threatened 25 homes and two railroad bridges along a two mile front near County Trunks B and M. Onalaska firefighters with 17 men extinguished the blaze, aided by five men at bridges. West Salem units were called, then La Crosse County crews. Fire Chief Paul Skogen said the fire reached 30 to 50 feet in spots and the major concern was protecting homes along old Highway 16.
