Viet Cong radio announced three day Christmas and New Year truces, longer than the Saigon plan, starting 1 a.m. Dec 24 and 11 a.m. Dec 23 CST for Christmas, ending Dec 27, with New Year’s truce from midnight Dec 30 to midnight Jan 2. Thieu set 24 hour cease-fires beginning Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, while U.S. forces will join.
Washington AP reports the nationwide unemployment rate fell by 0.5 points to 3.4 percent in November, driven largely by people leaving the labor force. Labor force declined 83,000. 78.7 million employed. Average weekly earnings fell 62 cents to 116.63. hourly earnings steady at 3.11.
In Pittsburgh Hill District a gunman fired from a third floor window killing one man and wounding another before a nearly three hour standoff. Police used tear gas and attack dogs as snow fell, and the suspect Channel J. Dersarkissian, 46, was captured as his room caught fire. Brown and Miller were identified as the dead and wounded. Miller was in satisfactory condition after the ordeal.
In Detroit AP report, denom inational reps began signing statements to support a young draft resister after the National Council of Churches declined to. About 800 delegates attend the triennial assembly with thousands of nonvoting representatives. Rev Arthur Walmsley of Boston says many delegates sign as individuals to ally with the resister. Paint splashing by a nondelegate provoked apologies from Methodist Bishop John Wesley Lord of Washington for the incident.
Los Angeles AP Susan Denise Atkins, charged with murder, plans to testify to the grand jury investigating the Tate murders. Her attorney said she will reveal details of the case and claim she was hypnotized by Charles Manson. Prosecutors may indict Manson for conspiracy to murder and seek related charges against others.
Two Israeli passengers Shlomo Samueloff and Sarah Muallem were released from a hijacked TWA jet in Damascus and flew to Athens. In exchange Israel freed 13 Syrians including two pilots. The hijacked plane had been seized Aug 29 en route from Rome to Athens and Tel Aviv, with a bomb damaging the aircraft in Damascus.
Secretary of the Army appoints civilian Robert MacCrate and associate Jerome Walsh Jr to aid Lt. Gen. Peers inquiry into a possible cover-up of the My Lai field investigation. Calley faces court martial for alleged massacre of at least 109 Vietnamese civilians as the Peers board questions witnesses in secret at the Pentagon.
Senate votes to drop a 40 year limit on private foundations tax exemptions. Mondale argues the provision would kill existing foundations while Gore defends a reasonable limit. The chamber also backs restoring full medical expense deductions for seniors and dependent parents, raising revenue losses.
