Springfield Illinois awoke under armed guard as the State militia took control after a second night of unrest. Gov Den ten and States Attorney Hatch planned a special grand jury to indict more than 200 rioters locked up amid scattered clashes including an attack on Lincoln’s statue and an attempt to damage power and fire alarm lines.
About 100 men gathered at the county jail in Paducah Kentucky and demanded Will Hornsby a Black man accused of assaulting 12 year old Nita Powell. Officials said Hornsby was not in custody and the crowd dispersed after a search. The girl and her screams prompted witnesses to say a man fled through a window under moonlight.
Tempt was frustrated by soldiers who fired on men injuring one. Over 5,000 troops and state officials press to quell mob violence as Judge Creighton orders a special grand jury for Richardson accused of raping Mrs. Hallam. A second mob hanging occurred near a public school across from the capital.
A mob attacked the Illinois state house grounds and surged toward the arsenal housing hundreds of Black women and children seeking safety. Cavalry and infantry under Lieutenant Colonel Abbott charged the mob, breaking the assault and driving rioters away as Springfield locked down.

La Crosse welcomed 125 National Editorial association delegates with an automobile tour and refreshments at the Elks club. Citizens praised the city, citing its municipal perfection and hospitality as editors praised the tour and staff.
Lincoln August 17. William Jennings Bryan declined to respond immediately to James W. Van Cleave who accused him of knowing the Democratic platform charges are false. Bryan plans a later statement and a Des Moines speech on the tariff issue. He denies selling out Col James Guffey for 200000 and rejects Pittsburg reports of a pay-off to influence convention seating.
Benjamin De Gilda, once a prosperous shoemaker driven out by Black Hand threats, is found in the morgue with Benjamin De Felix, alleged chief of the gang. De Gilda killed De Felix in the street upon return, fatally stabbed De Felix’s father, and then killed himself as police closed in in a field near Westchester, Pennsylvania.
In Pittsburg on August 17 John Bobsik, returning from a christening, had his horses run away and overturn the carriage. He found his wife had given birth to a baby boy during the accident. Both were uninjured as they were driven home.
George B. Cortelyou and Congressman J Sloat Fassett toured Sagamore Hill today. Charles Sheldon, Republican national treasurer, was also part of the party.
Community names Miller Wm Dunn C C Fowler and wife H A McFadden J L Gillespie appear with newspapers The Commonwealth South Bend Tribune Canfield Dispatch and Standard Hollidaysburg paused for continuation on page 4.
London reports King Edward granted Voigt release on Emperor William's orders. Voigt, a cobbler, impersonated a German captain in 1906, arrested the town officials in Coppenick and seized about $1,000 in town funds.
A steamer named Leelandau exploded on Carp Lake near Mackinaw City. One passenger, Mrs. Isabel Ahonta of Traverse City, was killed and several others severely hurt or missing. About fifty people were aboard at the time.

Footprints of a man beside Faith Davis a 16 year old girl were found with her body in Mill Pond. Police suspect murder and disposal in the water. Witness reports a young man seen with Davis near the mill pond Friday. Parents are wealthy. mother is sister and heir of the late William Marsh Rice.
Charlie Niebuhr returning to the Stoddard hotel reports Crosby Point camp is full and the fishing remains excellent. Sailboats and frequent visitors fill the harbor as visitors enjoy easy catches. Teddy Olson and J A Meyer join the camp for the week. Olson may return for the ball game later today.
David D. Wardwell a veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars dies in Bisbee Arizona after arriving with his leper wife who is confined in a cabin to avoid placement in a leper colony. The wife remains unconscious in the adjoining room as she cries for freedom.
In Wyoming, a Cincinnati suburb, Susie Merritt, a colored woman, was arrested yesterday afternoon. The arrest sparked an incipient riot as officers fought to subdue assailants. Policeman George Distler was stabbed in the back during the melee, and several Black residents were injured by bullets bricks and stones.
Captain Peter C. Hains and his brother T Jenkins Hains face Magistrate Gilroy in Long Island City court on the murder charge of publisher William E Annis. The hearing ends in a one week adjournment as authorities note a potential unwritten law and a claimed confession by Mrs Hains is kept in safekeeping.
Cevera of the Spanish navy writes from Va to Taft expressed support for his election. He says he knows little of the U S but believes Taft should be elected based on what he has heard. He notes no personal opinion on the election itself.
La Crosse citizens are urged to attend a August 17 City Hall meeting on Mississippi river waterway improvements. John A. Fox of the National River and Harbor Congress will speak, with Mayor Wendell A. Anderson and local leaders promoting inland navigation as a commerce boost.
