Committee Defeats Bid to Open Bids Above \$5 000
The common council judiciary and administration committee defeated 4 to 1 a proposal by Alderman Harold Lee to require the finance committee to open bids on supplies and equipment over five thousand dollars and to give the council final say on such purchases. The 1955 resolution for the director of finance and purchase to buy goods remains in question as legal opinions differ on legislative versus administrative authority. Aldermen argued the change could expand or complicate the budgeting process and questioned the role of the current purchasing office.

End Non academic Programs Mayor Says End Non Academic Programs
Mayor Milo G Knutson proposed on a TV radio talk that non academic programs be removed from school hours and shifted to after school activities He argued this would free time for academics and provide organized recreation after school He noted driver training should occur after school and not within academic hours The plan involves a Logan pool dispute with North Side residents and a new South Side pool costing about 170 000 for outdoor and around 500 000 for an indoor outdoor version He claimed the Citizens Education Committee supports Logan pool to enable a classroom addition and more high school activities For the South Side site he cited 84 students per acre versus 241 per acre at Logan and estimated the new high school cost around 3 million dollars
