Rev. Madison C. Peters left a Brooklyn Cosmopolitan club banquet after clashes over interracial relations. The event drew white speakers like Miss Mary White Overton and exposed tensions as Booker T. Washington was hissed while Du Bois earned applause. Washington, at the Manhattan hotel, declined comment.
Washington April 28 Senator Robert M La Follette of Wisconsin, recently ill, shows improvement and is expected to resume duties soon. His first act may be a speech in the Senate on tariff legislation.

Nebraska City April 28 Edward Fenner, driven by personal crisis after his wife and daughter left for St Joseph Missouri, shot himself in a tragic suicide. Neighbors report a distraught man who acted alone in the moment of crisis.

Sioux Falls April 28 John Steltz also known as John Clark confessed to killing Theo Lotham and another man. He was sentenced today to life in the penitentiary for the murders.

A fierce storm on the Mississippi sinks the steamer Miriam after it capsizes five miles past the St Francis river. Seventy five passengers, mostly carnival workers, cling to the wreck as thirteen drown. The Britannia battleship boiler explosion reported in Portsmouth adds to the day’s disasters.
Samuel Schneider a tailor in St Louis due to jealousy drenched his wife with sulphuric acid and shot himself. He died and the wife was left disfigured for life.

Cardinal Logue presided while Cardinal Gibbons delivered the sermon as papal benediction arrived via apostolic delegate. Roosevelt sent congratulations to Archbishop Farley on the diocesan milestone.
In Trenton on April 28 the New Jersey Democratic convention faces a bitter clash between factions led by former Senator James Smith Jr and Robert Davis. Smith seeks an uninstructed delegation with unit rule to oppose Bryan. Davis wants delegates instructed for Bryan or sent freely to the convention.
