Champion wrestler Harry Muldoon announces he will not appear in public matches in La Crosse again. Future bouts will be behind closed doors with no gate receipts, and only selected friends admitted. A return match with Blum is planned for Tomah, date undisclosed.
General agents of the Equitable Life Assurance Society met at the Hotel Savoy in New York to form a permanent organization for general agents and district managers. They plan to discuss sending a committee to Albany to petition the governor and legislature to amend the charter to let policyholders become directors and vote for directors.
Madison April 19 Senator Eaton faced a contempt citation by his colleagues after sworn statements during a bribery trial. The resolution ordered him to appear and show cause why he should not be expelled or punished. The Senate advanced the forestry bill and heard petitions from Milwaukee against the Stout saloon bill near schools.
Reports from Scripps dispatches April 19 describe the Russian squadron remaining in Kamranh bay through May while Rojestvensky sends cruisers to overhaul merchant ships toward the Formosa straits. Transports accompany the fleet under a Russian merchant flag between Kamranh bay and Saigon.
Senator Morris attended the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive association banquet as a special guest. The group has raised over $160,000 by private subscription to fund parks and drives, earning Madison wide national recognition for its work. Leading legislators were present by special invitation.
Scripps-McRae Dispatch reports in Mankato Minnesota on April 19 that the second trial of Dr Geo R Koch for the murder of rival Dr Gebhardt of New Ulm opened. Koch is free on $20,000 bail and confident of acquittal.
Maria no Toribio justice of the peace at Mariveles Luzon is under arrest on sedition charges. Advices received here state Toribio wrote letters aimed at inciting rebellion. For rent a suite of furnished rooms at 12 South Third Street.
Rockwell E. Osborne, a Shiloh Monument commission member, has been notified that the monument is completed and will be inspected by the commission tomorrow. He is currently in Milwaukee and will depart tonight for the famous battlefield.
The commission will be at Shiloh about a week. Other members listed include Capt. F. H. Magdeburg of Milwaukee D. G. James of Richland Center and J. W. Baldock of Clinton.
Johann Hoch the confessed bigamist and alleged wife murderer stood before Judge Kersten in Chicago to face trial for the murder of Mrs Marie Welker Hoch. Assistant United States Attorney Olson prosecuted, Attorney Plotke defended. Six women who claim Hoch as their husband attended the proceeding.
Two German servant girls employed at Herman Pagel’s home on North Halstead Street died after inhaling gas. Pagel and his wife were revived. The girls, unnamed in the report, apparently blew out the gas.
The steamer Linehan once owned by McDonald Brothers of La Crosse and part of the Mississippi River Towing fleet was burned to the water's edge at Nashville. Valued at 20000 dollars and insured for 6000, the vessel is a total loss. A large amount of nearby freight on platforms was also destroyed.
Since the city let contracts for pavement on South Fourth Street excluding the block between King and Cass streets, property owners press the council committee on special street improvements to include it. A petition was referred to the committee and no report is made yet, with owners considering a second petition to save costs by joining the work with the rest.
Articles of incorporation were filed yesterday with the secretary of state at Madison for the Camp company of La Crosse. Incorporators A. F. Esperon Roy E. Bigham and J. A. Moen capitalized at $5,000. The firm is formed to conduct manufacturing in La Crosse.
Fourteen year old William Blasier of Milwaukee ran away Sunday to seek his fortune in La Crosse, citing chores at home. Portage Chief Comstock found him riding a passenger train and took him into custody. The boy was returned to his father after telegram notice.
Joseph Jefferson is better today after a restful night. He appeared bright and cheerful this morning, according to a Scripps-McKae Dispatch report from Jacksonville Florida dated April 19.
J P Morgan met King Victor Emmanuel in Rome today to receive thanks for returning the cope stolen from the Ascoli cathedral. The private audience acknowledged Morgan’s generous act and assistance in recovering the artifact.
Samuel Andwell and Michael Jabara, both Greeks newly arrived from New York to La Crosse, are jailed on charges of obtaining goods under false pretenses. They conspired to redirect a $200 dry goods shipment to Prairie du Chien, then bartered time with police in Dubuque to capture their partner. Both are in county jail awaiting trial before Judge Brindley.
About 150 gas light and power officials from across the state urged the house of representatives to hold a hearing on a municipal ownership bill. They claimed $200,000,000 in investment and pressed for a hearing set for 4 o clock in the afternoon after the bill moved to its third reading.
In Paris on April 19 authorities report that in reaction to Limoges worker killings anarchists intend to attack army and police officers. They reportedly decided to avoid large marches but will target officers found alone on streets and during patrols.
Thirty new subpoenas were served on witnesses connected with the federal grand jury investigation of the packing industry. The jury reconvened in the federal building and heard four witnesses. It believed several summoned witnesses were preparing to leave the city.
Officers from the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company and Racine police pursue a gang of boys blamed for wrecking sixty five street light globes in the Second and Third wards and forty more in other areas. They have broken lamp ironwork as well.
The Janesville Chautauqua has been formally organized and will hold a ten day program for the next five years. It runs from July 26 to August 6 with Mrs. John A. Logan among the engaged speakers.
Miss Nanny Carnegie, youngest daughter of Mrs. Thomas Carnegie and niece of Andrew Carnegie, reportedly married a year ago to James Hever who was her mother's coachman. The couple recently returned from abroad with a baby daughter. Hever had two children from a previous marriage.
