Burn Fires First Campaign Shots For Governor

Terin H Burn opened his Republican bid for governor in Stota Kansas speaking from his historic farm porch. He called for tax relief for agriculture removing tolls on bridges free nextbooks repeal of obsolete laws and immediate water power development. He proposed a state budget ten million dollars less than last year and cutting political appointees to save costs. Burn urged tax relief for farmers through land tax reform and higher county funding from indirect taxes while limiting highway mileage to accelerate construction. He supported regulation of motor buses education and public health with fair treatment between it and capital. The speech drew about 140 guests and relatives at a Paola Kans wedding.

Kingsport Gets New Federal Post Office Building

The Treasury announced a $226,000 Kingsport post office project with bids opened in Washington on July 23. Construction must begin within 60 days of bid opening and finish within 481 calendar days, with a daily penalty for delays, placing completion forecast in late fall 1921. The brick stone building at Broad and New streets will cover about 28,000 square feet across basement, first and second floors, featuring a front on Broad Street and a main entrance on that street.

Jefferson county officers placed heavy guards around the Port Arthur suspect Rainey Williams after a mob from Port Arthur attempted to storm the county jail.
