Washington reports the President's Interdepartmental Alcohol Committee urged Congress to raise the distilled spirits tax to $2.00 per gallon, with beers at 54 per barrel and wines graded by alcohol content. The plan also adds 16 cents per gallon on certain wines and an 8.76 total on blended and rectified spirits, replacing current rates.
Miss Gladys McDaniels 17 died of burns while starting a fire at the Hendrix home on Morrisowa highway twelve miles from here. Four others injured include Robbie Hendrix 10 months, Clary Nadine Hendrix 20 months, Mrs Hendrix 21, and Mr Hendrix. The blaze followed an explosion of a coal oil can used to start the fire.

Earl Blanton a St. Louis ice cream dealer was scheduled to address the Missouri Association of Ice Cream Manufacturers in Columbus but was unable to attend after a Bath accident left him hospitalized. He slipped in the tub and sustained two broken ribs.
Fire at a Sault Ste Marie residence killed seven people including Mrs Genevieve Hibblen and her four children plus Mrs Erline Orr and her daughter Constance. Fire started from an overheated stove and was not discovered until it had spread, trapping all occupants who were asleep.
Washington reports that the NRA plans a two fold approach to codes by creating government boards including labor and consumer representatives to observe industrial pay and code actions. Labor demands for a formal partnership with industrialists were reportedly rejected, but a front seat role in reviewing authorities may be granted without veto power.

Colonel and Mrs. Charles A. Lindbergh ended a Natal visit with a 1:30 p m arrival after a flight from Natal. They covered 1,094 miles and faced 3,000 miles more to reach Miami. In Natal they drew enthusiastic crowds, but Lindbergh avoided photos and parties, greeting Brazilians before boarding the plane for Miami via Para and Brazil along the South American coast.
Luther Dean Jackson, a Black man scheduled for execution at Tucker State Prison Farm Arkansas, received a 10 day reprieve from Governor Futrell as an inquiry proceeds into the guilt of Philip Windecker, a North Little Rock grocer slain in the state case. Jackson protested his innocence as authorities prepared the electric chair.
Los Angeles dispatch reports opera singer Mary McCormic faces a battery trial in addition to a $1 million civil suit. Deputy City Attorney Y G Higgins filed the battery charge after McCormic slapped biographer Miay Grace Williams at a newspaper office as Williams sought secret settlement details with McCormic's ex husband Prince Serge Mdivani. Williams had filed the million dollar damages suit.

Nashville leaders Luke Lea and his son Luke Lea Jr face a Tennessee Supreme Court session to review habeas corpus efforts tied to NC bank law convictions. The historic case stems from charges linked to Central Bank & Trust Company failures in Asheville in 1951. The elder Lea received six to ten years. his son faced a 25 000 fine or two to six years.
General Hugh S. Johnson, NRA head, called the Roosevelt Dollar the soundest money on earth. He told the National Manufacturers Association that the president is on sound ground and that codes were formed by common consent, not fiat. Johnson urged members to think for themselves and said opposition hopes will fail if Roosevelt stays on course.
In Augusta Georgia militant anti liquor groups press the governor to block a city liquor ordinance set to take effect January 4. City officials say raids on all liquor sellers are possible under state law while a mass meeting at Curtis Baptist Church maps plans to oppose enforcement.
Washington December 8 AP The Agriculture Department liberals claim a possible partial victory as Farm Administrator George M Peek is expected to resign. President Roosevelt wants to keep Peek in a high federal post, while Wallace offered a new position for his aide. A compromise between Peek and liberals seems unlikely as tensions rise over vetoes and policy control.
Nashville December 8 AP The Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools was urged to enforce education standards for athletes at member institutions. Du University president urged direct responsibility while other leaders warned the association has not succeeded in cleaning up athletics. Mississippi State College and Mississippi State Teachers College were readmitted. Ole Miss readmission conditions and other colleges were noted amidst administrative changes.
