Union Service at First Church on Sunday Evening

The regular Sunday union service will be at First Church at 8 o'clock with Rev. W. L. Pressly of Boyce Memorial ARP Church preaching. This is the second in the summer series of union services. Also noted is Robert Abernethy of Kings Plane to attend the national Junior Chamber of Commerce convention in Beach, California. Mrs. S. A. Crouse has resigned from the city hall office due to ill health. City Manager Burdette reports at the regular disbursement meeting Tuesday night.

Picnic at First Presbyterian Church Set for June 14

First Presbyterian Church will hold its annual picnic on Friday June 14 at Lake Crawford. Parents and children should meet at the church at 3 p.m. with picnic baskets. Supper will be served between 6 and 6 30 p.m. for late arrivals.

Tax Prepayments Offer Discount for June Payments

Citizens paying 1947 48 taxes in June will receive a two percent discount. City officials reminded residents that the discount also applies to other tax related payments due in the same period.

Archdale Farms Gifts Heifer to Grover FFA Chapter

Archdale Farms partnered with the FFA chain project to donate a registered Guernsey heifer to Grover Future Farmers of America. The calf, Francis, born October 19, 1946, was awarded by chance to Douglas McDaniel of Grover and the Bethlehem community. The prize ties to Archdale’s dairy lineage and highlights NC’s dairy industry potential.

City Officials Rehire, Mauney Gift Accepted at City Hall

The City Board met for five hours and re employed all city workers with about 10 percent raises. It approved adopting a broad business tax, accepted the J B Mauney family gift for a Jacob Mauney Library and Teacherage on Piedmont Avenue, and set terms including a three member administration commission. The board also trimmed stadium lighting fees, approved a franchise taxi ordinance, and set new salaries for department heads, with Mayor Fulton paid $50 monthly.

Mrs Caveny Dies in Shelby Funeral Held at Central Methodist

Mrs. Caveny, mother of John Caveny of Shelby, died after a period of declining health. Funeral services were held at Central Methodist Church in Shelby with interment at Sunset Memorial. She was formerly Miss Lillian Belt Saratt and an active church member. survivors include two sons Charles and Howard Caveny and four others.

Mrs. B. L. Mercer Rites Held in Kings Mountain

Funeral services for Mrs. B L Mercer 72 were conducted Thursday at Boyce Memorial ARP Church with Rev Wy L Pressly presiding. Interment followed at Mountain Rest cemetery. Surviving are her husband two daughters two sons two sisters and five brothers along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The obituary notes her faithful membership in Memorial ARP Church and highlights years of service.

Joyce Falls 15 Year-Old Orator With Far-Reaching Talent

Joyce Falls, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs Craig Falls, is gaining recognition as a brilliant local speaker. In 1944 she won the Baker Reading Medal in grammar school and the Fulton Reading Medal in high school in 1945. She represented Cleveland county in a state reading contest and has since presented orations to Kiwanis Lions Woman's Home Arts Clubs Bethware school and various clubs in Shelby.

Old Presbyterian Church to be Auctioned in Kings Mountain

B D Herndon of Kings Mountain says the old Presbyterian church property will go to auction soon. Vacant since 1935 after the new First Presbyterian church opened, the former church now serves as a warehouse for Kings Mountain Furniture. The sale includes the church and lot at S Piedmont Ave and Mountain Street, 75 by 100 feet, adjoining city property where City Hall sits. No auction date has been set yet, but will be announced shortly.

iSix Enters Western NC Baseball Tourney at City Stadium

Six semi pro teams are entered for the western district North Carolina tournament at City Stadium from June 30 to July 3. The Lions Club sponsors the event, with the winner advancing to the national finals in Wichita, Kansas. Teams include Kings Mountain Vets, Forest City Owls, Lance Packers, Lincolnton Red Sox, Monroe Blue Sox, and Norwood, led by Lance in the Mid-State league.
