First Group of Cleveland Men Took Physical Exams Thursday
The reactivated draft moved 62 Cleveland County men to the Charlotte Quartermaster Depot for preinduction physicals Thursday morning. A special bus left Shelby at 7 am for the trip. The board is beginning with 22 year olds, with physically fit men awaiting induction orders after at least two days of processing. A string of fires this week hit Pauline Mill and the L Fulton home, with firemen called Sunday night to a blaze at the mill and Tuesday morning to an auto on Grace Street. The Fulton residence fire on West Mountain Street at 7:15 Thursday caused kitchen and roof damage. sprinkler systems limited damage. Damages from the mill fire exceed 2000 dollars with only one room lost. the car fire on Grace Street caused slight damage.

High School Football Practice Opens With 45 Out For Kings Mountain
In its second day of the 1950 practice season Kings Mountain high school football began with 45 players reporting for duty. Under Head Coach Shu Carlton and Assistant Parker, aided by Pride Batterree of Lenoir Rhyne, the squad held a light scrimmage at City Stadium in hot weather. The returning lettermen from 1949 form the backbone of the 1950 squad, joined by many graduates from the grammar program and new candidates.

Roberts Bound Over On Charge Of Rape
Charlie Roberts a 45 year old Oak Grove farmer was bound over to the October term of Superior court in a Recorder's court hearing in Shelby held without bond on a charge of raping a 21 year old mother of three. Deputy Martin Ware testified Roberts visited the home of Mrs. Willie Mae Willis at midnight claiming a hungry child needed bread and forced entry then ravished the woman. Roberts confessed at Cleveland County jail after arrest at his home.
