Grand Fourth of July Celebration Impresses Town

A large but orderly crowd celebrated the nation’s 138th birthday with a morning children’s parade, a speech by H Lindley, and music. W R Jewell of Danville and E E Baker of Veedersburg spoke as the day’s events, including a long Civil War address, fireworks, and a concert, drew 3000 downtown attendees.

Miss Ara Philpott Rescued After Carbolic Acid Incident

Miss Ara Philpott attempted to end her life with carbolic acid but the solution was diluted, burning her mouth. Found by her parents in a semi conscious state, Dr. F S Cuthbert administered treatment and she is expected to recover. The incident followed a dispute with Lloyd Gaskill over their relationship.

Surprise birthday gathering honors Mrs Tunin on fifty

Thursday July 2 Mrs Robi Tunin turned fifty and hosted neighbors and the Rebekah Lodge at her home. About forty guests arrived with Mr and Mrs Tunin, who helped arrange refreshments of cream and cakes and led games for a pleasant evening. Mrs Tunin received a new vacuum sweeper and a Rebekah emblem pin from husband and sons.

Grandmother Caroline Sweeny Dies After Brief Illness

Caroline Sanders Sweeny died Wednesday afternoon about 3 o'clock after a brief illness at nearly 90. She was mother to three children, two daughters and a son. The oldest daughter and her husband predeceased her. Funeral services were held Thursday at 2:30 PM at the U B church with Rev Rardin officiating. Burial followed in Harveysburg cemetery.

Mary A Cox to Speak at Kingman Friends Church

Mary A Cox will attend the Kingman Friends Church Sunday for Sunday school at 9 30 and worship at 11 00. All members urged to attend. Welcoming notice appears in the community page alongside a birthday party report for Kenneth Howrey and a Covington visit by Charles Massey and family.

Street Improvement Blocked by Petition

After bidding for east end street work, a petition from property owners urged crushed stone instead of brick. Both brick and stone bids were rejected as too high, risking dropping the project. The board reserved ten days to decide and bought a $300 combined street sweeper and sprinkler.

Sunday Church Schedule and Lawn Sermon

The M E Church announces Sunday school at 9 30. Worship at 10 30 with evening preaching at 7 45 on the lawn north of the Christian church. Arrangements for lights and seats are ongoing. The male quartet will sing before the sermon. Everyone is urged to come in time.

Tangier area hosts weekend dinner gathering of local families

Mr and Mrs John R Swaim and daughter Anna hosted relatives including Joseph and George Little Baxter Little Audrey Elizabeth Reese Thaddeus Reese Clyde Little of Montezuma Indianapolis Kingman and nearby visitors. Music and games followed by a late departure.

Two Small Blazes in Town This Week

Town narrowly escaped two kitchen and shop fires this week. On Tuesday morning St Myer’s home caught fire from a kitchen chimney spark and only damaged the north roof and furniture moved outside. In a separate incident, H A Clingan’s butcher shop experienced a gasoline light flare up. employees extinguished it quickly with minimal damage.

Mary Ann Sweitzer born June 28 1831 died June 30 1914 aged 83 years 2 days. Survived by three children Nannie Taylor William and Grant Paddock. later married John Sweitzer who died eight years ago. Funeral July 2 at the Baptist church conducted by Rev A M Tomilson, burial at Bethany.

Young Married People Class Meets at Spencers

The Young Married People's Class of the M. E. church gathered at Mr. and Mrs. O. V. Spencer's home last Thursday with twenty two members and one guest, Mrs. W. N. Williamson of Indianapolis. Officers elected include President Mrs. W. E. McCrary, Vice-President Jas. Barks, Secretary and Treasurer Mrs. C. E. Hadley, Lookout Committee H. M. Brown, Mrs. Logan Dillon, and Mrs. Frank Maris.

Tangier Women's Welfare League meets on lawn event

The Women s Welfare League gathered on Mrs Will Swaim s lawn last Friday with over thirty members. They discussed dress today versus grandmothers morals and care tips. A solo by Mrs Will Pickard followed by notices of upcoming functions and visits capped the pleasant afternoon.
