Many Vets Were Under Age on Civil War Pension List
The pension department released figures on living Civil War veterans under the May 18 1912 act. It shows many soldiers were under age at enlistment. Among living painters are 1710 under 12, 5375 under 13, 11214 under 14, 16139 under 15, totaling 34438 under eighteen at enlistment and still on pension. There are 137277 aged 66-69, 513 aged 90-99, and one at 103. Additionally 2631 claims have $30 monthly disability. Three-fourths are ages 65-75, while nine percent are younger than 65.
