A Civil Service examination will be held in Veedersburg on Saturday January 10, 1914 to form an eligible register for Kingman County Rural Route No. 2. The job pays $1,100 per year and requires a carrier to supply his own conveyance. It is expected at least twenty applicants will contest from Kingman.
Merchants display handsome holiday stock with extensive lines for Christmas gift buyers. Stores urge customers to visit, promising unique articles and strong discounts. Miss Zula Howell leaves Kingman for Terre Haute to live with Aunt Mrs. Arthur Webster after six years as a Star office assistant. Miss Ruth Farr to replace her as typesetter. Rector & Ratcliff Grocery offers a ticket with each 25c purchase through December 24, culminating in a chamber set giveaway.
Guidelines say place Red Cross Seals on the reverse side of domestic mail and on any part of matter sent by express. Do not cover the address or strings, or seals on checks bills or legal documents. Seals are not postage and cannot carry mail. some countries will reject seals on the address side.
Epworth League services feature leader Wayne Cox with pianist Estel Duncan for a program on De naturizing our holy days and holidays. Beatrice Fisher reads scripture. Lois Ford sings. Myra Ford, Della Hurley, Ethel Cox, Cilbert Ratcliffe ask and answer questions about holidays and proper celebrations. Closing song No 202.
Indebted patrons in Kingman Indiana are urged to settle open accounts or notes with Renick and Norris. A temporary office is behind the Cory meat market. Bills unpaid by January 1 will be liquidated through the court. It is cheaper to settle now.
The bazaar at S. M. Myer store room offers fancy work and ready-made garments plus chicken noodles pie pickles celery and coffee for 2c. Proceeds aid the club. Needleworkers Club met with Mrs F R Jones for a pleasant afternoon with a prize won by Mrs B O Hudier.
The M E Ladies Aid Bazaar is set for Thursday December 18 at Alexander's opera house. The event offers fancy work aprons children clothing a quilt and comfort homemade candies and lunch oyster soup. An eight PM program features piano solo readings quartets recitations and serenades with a five cent admission for the entertainment.
In Indianapolis 20 foot high thermometers on business street corners and a courthouse unit in Fort Wayne track public support for the Red Cross seals drive. Cities across Indiana including Logansport South Bend Evansville Terre Haute Richmond vie to outpace Indianapolis as per capita sales climb toward a 100000 seat tally.
Arthur Woods and Floy Hadley suffered a head on collision during a Thursday basketball game and Arthur will miss days at home for collarbone healing. The domestic science class treated Freshmen and eighth graders to snacks, lifting spirits as they wrapped up the week's work. Teachers faced travel delays from strikes but escaped harm during Thanksgiving break. Juniors and Seniors held Current Events and debates on German, the Mexican Situation, Congress, and The Presidents Message, plus a German lesson. Dr. Cuthbert from Kingman spoke on hygiene stressing fresh air benefits.
Veedersburg was named for founder Peter Veeder. He wavered between Petersburg and Veedersburg and asked his Attica sweetheart to choose. She chose Veedersburg, and the town’s name was settled. The couple later parted. the woman never married and remains an honored Attica resident.
In Veebersburg talk has risen about surrendering the city charter to become a town to allow a local option vote on saloons. Opponents view the plan as a strategic blow to local pride and doubt it will be seriously pursued. Most citizens do not consider it a viable option.
Mrs John May of Marshall, sister of Mrs John Maris, was bitten on the wrist by her family dog while interfering with chickens. The dog’s head was sent to Indianapolis and found infected with hydrophobia. Mrs May received Pasteur Institute treatment in Indianapolis and was relieved from danger.
Several churches in the city unite for a Christmas tree and entertainment in the opera house on Christmas Eve. Each church and Sunday school group is urged to contribute, ensuring a joyful community event.
Retcor and Ratcliff announce a holiday promotion offering a $12 blue and gilt edge chamber set as a prize. Tickets issued with each 25 cent cash purchase starting Saturday December 13, and the drawing occurs Wednesday December 24 at 3 PM.

Mrs. Cates and family spent Saturday night and Sunday with Charles Huffman. Mrs. Verda Brown and child visited C. E. Thomas Saturday night. Miss Rose Gallagher spoke from Friday to Monday. Capt. Cates and family plan to go south for winter. Two teachers were absent from Institute Saturday. Mrs. Lizzie Woody visited on Wednesday. Ora Huffman returned Friday from summer work.
Mr and Mrs J F Redenbaugh marked a golden milestone in marriage with plans for a grand celebration cancelled in part due to absent children. Separately Joseph M Carter filed for divorce from Amanda Carter with a lengthy complaint prepared by O P Lewis.
Max Schwartz, long time Attica businessman, plans to retire from active counter service after January 1, 1914. His son Harry likely to take over management. An ad by George L. Cory promotes a fine range of books, toilet articles, bibles, toys and games this week. Mrs. Lizzie Reece visited sister Mrs. Manchledt in Montezuma Saturday. Garland Steinbaugh was in Attica on business Saturday.
Uncle Jim Wagennis of Irvington Indiana visits Miles Thompson and Thomas Weaver families for the week. Agriculture show Saturday night hosted by County Agent Reed draws good attendance. Mrs Anna Garret and children visited Mrs George Weaver. Anna Davis called on Lindus Hadley and family. Monthly meeting set for Thursday. One English spent Sunday with home folks.
Report on the seventh International Convention on Purity in Minneapolis from November 7, 1913. About 900 delegates and hundreds of visitors debated measures to suppress white slave traffic, end commercialized vice, and promote social purity. Notables included B S Steadwell, Kenyon, O Hara, Comstock, and Catherine Booth Cobborn.
H. J. McAlister plans a Christmas Eve giveaway of a handsome smoker's set described as a dandy gift. A fine line of cured meats is advertised at Cory Meat Market. A child's ring was found at G. L. Cory's Drug Store.
