Sins Fills, S.D., May 5 reports a young man Peter Mt. Sorklimo once of Dell Rapids facing seduction and later a second more serious charge after marrying a Dell Rapids woman. He was arrested at Tabor, released on bond, and is now in Minnehaha County Jail awaiting circuit court. Miss Josephine Anderson filed the warrants and Sorklimo is in custody with Deputy Crooks.
Farmers in Lowin grain district report a week of fair weather with seasonable temperatures and sunshine aiding drying of moist lands and field work. Wheat and oats seeding progress well across regions, with reseeding needed due to poor seed and damp cold spells. Winter rye and barley show good progress, potato planting and gardening advance, and soil moisture remains ample except in the far west where more moisture is needed.
Rev. Charles A. Lyons, once a church leader in Sioux Falls, has been arrested in St. Paul and brought back for trial after deserting his wife Emma Pervis in December. He waived preliminary hearing and faces the state circuit court. his wife aided in his capture by shadowing him at the depot. Lyons had previously married and deserted multiple times, deceiving Mrs. Lyons and others.
The council approved extending sewerage and water to Dakota University in Mite SD starting May 1. The project would run about three-fourths mile south and north from Main Street, with piping and mains extending near the university and toward the Omaha LORS area. Mitchell Wilhive will oversee the system, funded under city law to improve the river and creeks, with work beginning in June.
Summer school at Huron will be held for a few weeks with a large attendance expected. L. S. Dubois, county superintendent, will supervise the two week special sessions and the usual county institute for teachers. Credit will be given toward regular college work and certificates may be upgraded. Olive J. Clark and Alma Horrig will provide science and mathematics instruction. Strong enrollment already reported, with boarding and accommodations arranged for attendees.
The city of Winfred South Dakota enjoys a brisk growth phase with rising business activity. Visitors note rapid improvements including new storefronts and a modern public school building funded by bonds totaling over 6,000 dollars.
Pierre South Dakota reports 168 filings in April including 13 percent homestead entries and 9 declaratories totaling 27 609 acres across the district. Irker HH Willis and J. F. Bartell as marshal or justice of the peace. W. J. Lee ran for marshal but was defeated.
