After a summer of construction Kent College unveils expanded athletic facilities with 3 000 seat stadium upgrades and five practice fields. A new women's field house 12 tennis courts and expanded parking improve campus life while offices are redecorated and wiring upgraded.
Roger Wicks offers a month of free meals at the Kent restaurant to two Golden Flashes supporters. Ballots distributed weekly prize votes for one lineman and one backfield man based on team spirit conditioning and play.
Ray Novotny football and tennis coach and athletic instructor receives a one year leave of absence to join the National Guard training camp at Shelby Mississippi starting October 15. President K C Leebrick approves the leave and Novotny plans to return in time for the 1941 42 school term after the mandated one month extension.
Dr John F Cuber sociology professor challenges the view that college students are atheistic because they do not attend church He notes readers of Sociology and Social Research show nonattenders hold many traditional church views and favor churches as institutions more than church members He argues social control extends beyond formal membership or attendance.
Cleveland falls 7 2 in the opening game of a two game set with St Louis and drops a game and a half behind Detroit in the American League race. Detroit had rainouts and will host the White Sox in a doubleheader. The Tigers likely hold the edge heading into a final three game series in Cleveland starting Friday.
The Akron Buchtelite notes an incomplete football grid with all games listed except the Kent State clash at the Rubber Bowl on Nov 9. It marks the first meeting since 1936 severed athletic relations, with Kentonians eager despite Akron’s indifference.
Kent State University president Dr K C Leebrick challenged the faculty to meet sociological economic and physical needs of national preparedness. He urged departments to play a part in defense education and suggested simple draft registration aids and even limited military training through health and physical education courses. He offered interviews on the Burke Wadsworth measure and reviewed campus improvements and past achievements.
Ten new instructors join Kent State University faculty drawn from across the United States. New hires include two in journalism, two in biology, three in speech, and one each in economics, music, and business administration. Notable appointments include Albert Capuder from Ohio State in speech and James Heath from Stanford in biology.
Frances Koole announces daily radio work tryouts next week from 3 to 5 in the new radio room on the third floor of Kent hall. Auditions and interviews will be conducted by Professor Albert L. Capuder with former workshop members assisting. Open house for the studios will follow with visiting hours.
The first faculty meeting of the year is set for tomorrow at 4 PM in McGilvrey auditorium. President K. C. Leebrick will deliver the opening address followed by reports from the academic deans and the registrar. Plans for the year will be discussed.
Freshmen are asked to meet in the training school auditorium Thursday at 4 PM. The meeting, called by the student council, will discuss freshmen caps and related issues.
Dean Mary L Smallwood defends receptions and chaperones as social grace not discipline. She argues students should gain the ability to pass through receiving lines and notes Mrs Leebrick as a model who remembers faces after events. She praises dances and formal dress at the freshman dance and reception last Friday.
Dormitory diners in Lowry hall voted to continue breakfast and lunch cafeteria service for eight weeks. Mrs Elizabeth Fellers head dietitian reported enthusiastic approval from the survey. The new plan, begun after a successful summer trial, tests individual food choice while regular table service remains for evening meals.
