NYA funding at Kent University faces a 50 percent cut as enrollment drops and outside job options rise. Only 9000 for the coming three quarters remains, with about 50 workers employed from a peak of 140. Officials say NYA may end temporarily if need and funding decline continue.
The University marching band under Roy D. Metcalf will feature military formations this season on football fields. A bomber and an army tank with revolving treads will be built for the next home game, demanding tight coordination among ensembles. Urgent need for additional field drummers seen as Bob Deal returns to drum section. over half the band are freshmen. Inductees leaving Kent Monday will hear the band at Erie station at 9 am, with classes excused for farewell ceremonies.
A salvage campaign to collect scrap metal will be conducted this weekend by David R. Hinman and maintenance staff. The University scrap pile will be sold to local Kent dealers with credit sought from Kent State high school campaigners, Hinman said.
Thelma Howe and Dick Waterbury, freshmen at the university, begin their music paths after starring in the freshman variety show and the United Nations convocation. Thelma, 18, from Coshocton, plans concert singing with WLW auditions. she found pianist Rosemary Novak at a scavenger hunt. Dick, a Bedford graduate, has ten singing lessons and notes he does not intend a singing career, while hitchhiked about 11 000 miles last summer across 23 states.
Dr. H. D. Byrne, head of political science and Democratic state senate candidate, advocates two formulas for university funding. He argues funds should base on student count per dollar and building money per student per classroom. Byrne notes prior 1937 38 sessions partially implemented his plan and cites KSU heating plant and hall projects.
The first day of the penny drive raised $7.09, described as successful by Dean Raymond E Manchester. The program will continue each Thursday with the aim to fund sending The Kent States and the Duchess to KSU men in the armed services, and directories with names and addresses will go out next week.
Five representatives of the University visit Columbus for state university and high school problem talks. President K C Leebrick purchasing agent B F Renkert and trustee Charles Lake attend the Inter University council. Dr John Blair dean of education and Dr A L Heer director meet the Ohio High School Principals association and Conference of Deans.
Dr. Kenneth R. Pringle associate professor of English will return to Kent Sunday to bid goodbye to friends before leaving for Camp Perry Monday.
The University election committee released petition blanks for class officers and Homecoming queen for the October 22 student election. Petitions available from 8 am to 4 pm at the Office of the Student Council and due by October 15. Senior and junior classes elect four and sophomore two Members to Men's Union. Homecoming queen contest expected to be the year’s highlight with queen named in the October 23 Kent Stater. Council also seeks student union entertainment options and may rent the Captain Brady basement as a temporary student center.
About 100 freshmen led by George Bush raise the fresh flag 18 feet on the university flagpole at midnight. Opposed by 50 sophomores the greens win a partial victory after Larry Wooddell maintenance superintendent allegedly ties flag strings to the atrium and removes grease from the sophs
B F Renkert purchasing agent for the University says K books and student activity cards have been ordered and will arrive this week but procurement delays persist. Students should use fee cards for now while manufacturers grant government priority. The University directory of student names and addresses will be published soon under Registrar E C Stopher and Prof F B Marbut.
Dean Mary L. Smallwood announced a mandatory meeting for all women at 4 p m Monday in room 17 McGilvrey hall. Women in the glee club may be excused if cleared by Monday noon.
Lt Frances Maisch, former director of UMass Residences, writes a positive account of WAVES duty at Northampton Naval Training Station. She notes discipline, seriousness, and a collective effort by 120 women who became Women Volunteers and staff training schools while remaining colleagues here as assistants to male officers.
