Six hundred fifty freshmen will vote from 9 to 4 Thursday in the first election. George Inscho, president of the student council, cautioned that posters must be removed by 8 a m and no handbills or campaigning during polling. Four presidential, three vice presidential, five secretary, five treasurer candidates. six on the ballot for four council seats.
The Dramatists Alliance of Stanford university announces three prizes for 1946 competitions. The Maxwell Anderson award for verse drama is 100 dollars, the Stephen Vincent Benet award for radio plays is 50 dollars, and the Henry David Gray award for dramatic criticism is 50 dollars. Final entry date is March 20, 1946, with materials through the alliance box at Stanford University California.
After a week off the best bands in the land return from 8 to 10 in Wills gymnasium for a social dance. The event aims to help attendees shed some of the Thanksgiving excess with live music and dancing.
Dr James R Beck geography professor will address the Association of American Geographers during the Christmas vacation in Knoxville Tennessee from December 27 to 29 His talk features a map showing the dollar volume of trade for 177 cities including population shares and external trade levels He is a member of the Association and president of the Ohio Council of Geography Teachers Geographers nationwide attend these meetings
Carapetyan temporary assistant professor of music will be soloist at the School of Music season opener. Roy D. Metcalf announces the event featuring Stravinsky Mozart and Weber pieces with forty orchestra members at 4 p m Sunday Dec 16 in the university auditorium. Carapetyan will also sing three bass solos from Handel s Messiah with orchestra accompaniment.
The fifth annual Short Course in News Photography will run April 3 to 6 with financing from the Veterans Administration under the G I Bill. The course earns one credit quarter hour and includes a new photo competition entry. lectures total 35 hours.
Marge Jones, Ravenna freshman, is Alpha Omega sorority’s pick to compete in the Terese Green queen contest against six entrants. Other contestants include Mamie Cavoulas Beta Gamma, Donna Stouder Gamma Sigma Phi, Rosemary DePalma Moultonhall, Ann Demiter Pi Kappa Sigma, Dixie Grundy Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Jean Glaze Theta Sigma Upsilon. University theater winter production invites five men and four women to try out Thursday from 2 to 5 p m in the auditorium. Students needing special arrangements may contact Mrs Opal Boffo, director of the play.
Ninety four names of former university men killed in the armed services are listed in the memorial book with eighteen reported missing. It will be on display in the atrium once a design table by Elmer L. Novotny is built. The brown leather volume bears a gold inscription In Remembrance World War I.
The Geography Discussion group meets tomorrow from 7 to 8 p m in the faculty research room at Rockwell Library. All students and university members are invited to discuss if the American attitude toward Russia is belligerent.
James N. Holm asks prominent figures for comments on public speaking. Kaltenborn says be heard and understood. Stassen encourages students to study speaking. Knight notes public speaking as a valuable asset. Burton cites opportunity for clear expression in speech or writing.
Senator H. D. Byrne head of political science will speak at the K Vets meeting at 7 p m in Kent hall Room 219. John Fauser president urges all veterans including non members to attend with regular K Vet members.
Pledges in the victory loan drive sponsored by the Independent Students association have risen to $3800, nearly double the original quota. ISA president Mike Friedland says pledges may surpass $5000 before the December 8 end date. Daily solicitation runs 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kent Theater booth. At Monday's ISA meeting Fred Ellis was granted a temporary leave. Felice Faust and Irv Johnson will assume his duties. A social event follows the business meeting next Monday in Kent Hall Room 119 at 7:30.
Dr. Richard Briggs of B F Goodrich laboratory worked on the atomic bomb sub project at Princeton University under Professor Hugh Taylor. The Princeton work formed part of a national program at Columbia University with several divisions around the country. Briggs cannot disclose details and had only a year’s leave from Goodrich. He is an Oberlin College graduate and earned his PhD at Princeton.
Short interviews at the psychological clinic explore what students want to do and where they fit best. Dr. George R. Bach leads the Guidance Testing Program with assistants Dixie Grundy Lou Heck and Nellie Young. New women students will discuss results in December.
