Kent State University to host a local drive for the Naval Relief Society family fund aiming at 2000. Prof William D Taylor leads efforts with an all student group and committee chairs handling fraternities sororities honoraries departments and community contacts.
University coeds attend a six lesson auto mechanics course at Hower vocational school Akron to prepare as Red Cross ambulance drivers. The program, arranged by the Women's War committee, runs Tuesday evenings from 6 to 10 with instructors guiding the class. Enrollment costs 2.50 and Ms Parrish in the dean of women's office handles sign ups.
Director G. Harry Wright invites new faces for the May 27 and 28 production Heart of a City. Tryouts start today at 2 p.m. in the auditorium with many roles for women and men.
The annual publications banquet will be held at 8 p m May 21 at the Mayflower hotel Akron announced by Prof William D Taylor publications committee chairman Applications for editors and business managers of The Stater Duchess and Chestnut Burr should be submitted to Professor Taylor by 5 p m Tuesday May 14 The first graduating class in the four year history of the school of journalism will be honored at the event.
Pvt. Roman Wojno a former student and swimming star has been appointed aquatic director of the United States Recreational park at Osage Beach Missouri.
The University president Dr. K. C. Leebrick objected to transferring social events and policy committees to the student council, while the council backed most changes. They kept final control of key committees but required 10 percent student petitions to take issues to council. Objections also arose to activity fee provisions allowing student committees to authorize up to 200 dollars. larger expenditures need trustees approval.
Dr. Maurice Baum head of philosophy to deliver honorary address at the annual scholastic assembly in the University auditorium on May 19. Topic is The Scholar Scholarship and the War. Dr. Louis A. Tohill announced the program and noted honor students will receive special recognition.
Jane Higgins, a junior in the college of education, won Ohio's best speaker in the women's extemporaneous division at the state speech conference at Capital University in Columbus. She argued in favor of extending the selective service to include women and received a gold recognition bracelet and a cup for the University.
The second concert in National Music Week features the University band led by Roy D. Metcalf and the Women's Glee Club directed by Miss Euleda Littlejohn. The program starts at 8 15 in the University auditorium.
University students with last names E through K must register for ration books. Dr. Amos L. Heer of the Training School leads the program. Registration runs today from 3 to 10 p.m. in room 30, with other letter groups previously scheduled: A to D yesterday, L through S today, and T through Z tomorrow.
A radio salute to Dean Raymond Manchester for sending University publications to students in the armed services will air today at 4 p m from WADC Akron. The program features a dramatized letter All My Love Jane by Lindy Barch, readings from letters from Kent State service members, a four minute history review, and a Cardinal Key round table discussion led by Dorothy Liederlschlag Jane Stroup Carol Sayers and Jeanne Claypoole.
