Forty Lowry hall women are forced to relocate for the winter quarter as civilian pilot Lowry arrives in Oosts. The photo shows Margaret Burton, Martha Fitzgerald, and Frances McCall gathering belongings and moving to other dormitories or off campus.
KSRW plans a 4 30 PM airdate for George Gershwin a Musical Kaleidoscope on WADC Akron. A 30 minute Gershwin music segment precedes the live studio program with a 10 member cast and E Lenard Silverstein as narrator.
University students will usher in the New Year with the annual ball sponsored by the Women’s league Friday Jan. 8 from 9 p m to 12 in Wills gymnasium. Blanket invitations go to all faculty and administrative officers. Each student activity card admits one couple. Victory corsages will be sold outside the gym. committee hopes men buy them for less than 75 cents.
The Army Enlisted Reserve Corps and Navy Reserve status remains steadied as students return to campus for another quarter. Air corps enlisted reserve members will be called at the air corps discretion. Marine corps officer candidates may enlist at age seventeen.
Members of the Student Housing committee are asked to attend a short but important meeting Wednesday at 4 p m in room 116 Merrill Hall according to Earl Vacariu.
Professor Stump announces final tryouts for inn keeper Jonathan Logan and the Winter University Theatre production Pure as the Driven Snow. Rehearsals begin this week with intensified sessions in February for performances on the 18th and 19th. Lead roles go to Peggy Calhoun and Stan Mouse with a full cast including Jim Crafford Jean Barger Mary Haines Elinor Hildebrand Wilbur Adams Kitty Liptak Don Shanower Ellen Hausrath Dorothy Jones. Set construction starts immediately.
E C Stopher registrar announced that 1031 paid registrations occurred on the first day, a drop of 452 from the prior quarter’s first day, with reasons cited as students leaving for armed forces and war industry jobs. Women also reduced enrollment amid new industry opportunities.
Herb Myers of the University ranked ninth in the Fourth Annual Tau Kappa Alpha Discussion tournament at the Hotel Morrison in Chicago on December 29 and 30, earning the highest category. Bernie Harris and Scheffel Pierce tied for 16th. 47 competitors from leading mid western universities attended. Northwestern and the University of Chicago were among represented schools. Holm noted no Kent student placed below average and repeated leaders in three of four events. Previously Jacot Powell and Hart had also reached the top category.
Students use the toboggan slide while the skating ring remains out of order due to maintenance staff shortages. Larry Wooddell says no volunteers have appeared to flood the rink, so both ice and slide access are limited.
Dr C F Rumold head of the department of physical science was injured yesterday when a ring stand fell at McGilvrey hall cutting his temporal artery. Dr A O De Weese director of student health service said he lost much blood but will be up and around tomorrow.
Forty CPT boys moved from Davey Barracks into the new wing of Lowry hall on December 22. J. S. Seawright says the rooms are fine and the view and food are good. P.S. notes the phone number 3081. Bob Jones confirms the friends and phone, while Charles Johnson calls it not bad and Harold Turner mentions girls with C cards visiting.
YMCA president Frank Crocroft announced plans for a Brotherhood Week radio program. A YMCA cabinet meeting Thursday at 7 in room 110 Kent Hall will discuss the event coordinated with the YWCA for February 19 to 28.
University theater groups will maintain a full schedule in cooperation with the Office of War Information and other educational theatre groups. The decision came at a Chicago meeting of high school and college honorary dramatic fraternities on December 29 and 30.
Four university students present a student directed one act comedy for the Daughters of the American Revolution at the Patton Memorial home Monday Jan 11 under the school of speech sponsorship. Directed by Adelaide Snyder the married farce The Eligible Mr Bangs stars Bill Corey and Jeanne Smith with Dorothy Wolfe and Herb Myers in supporting roles.
