Fire Drives 200 From Lorraine Hotel in Chicago
A basement blaze at the Lorraine hotel on South Wabash Avenue forced more than 200 guests to evacuate. Firemen said the fire was contained to the basement but smoke filled the 235 room building for hours in freezing 20 degree weather. Night Clerk James Alphonse detected smoke early and woke guests while operator George Hildenberg alerted others by phone. A female guest, Esther Hurt, 32, injured herself while escaping from a fourth floor room when a jammed fire escape window failed.

Pleads Insanity In Charges of Attack on Baby
Allen Harold Gustavus 22 arraigned in county court on assault with intent to do great bodily harm to his eight month old daughter Sharon. He pleaded not guilty on insanity grounds and is bound over to the next term of municipal court on $5,000 bond. Sharon remains seriously injured though improving after skull fractures. Gustavus, a World War II Marine, was in Veterans Hospital at Mendota Wood in 1947.
