Egyptian underground fighters attacked an eight man Royal Scots patrol in Port Said with grenades and machineguns injuring one soldier. Seven Egyptians were arrested as tensions rise amid evacua tion of Anglo French troops and fears of further violence.
Milwaukee officials including Port Director Harry Brockel announce that Milwaukee Green Bay and Chicago will seek six to seven days free time with no demurrage from western railroads. The move follows the Interstate Commerce Commission’s cancellation of a rule unequal to ocean ports for freight car demurrage. Officials say equal time is needed for Milwaukee’s port expansion tied to the St. Lawrence Seaway project.

An inch and a quarter of snow and temperatures as low as 5 above brought Kenosha its first real winter. Readings by noon showed 28 at the sewage plant, 32 at American Motors, and 34 downtown. Tonight cloudy and warmer with a low of 20 to 26. Tuesday outlook calls for snow flurries and colder afternoon with highs in the 30s. The sun rose at 7 07 and will set at 4 21.

Clinton Tennessee reopened Clinton High School with eight Negro students returning to class alongside white students. Three police cars patrolled briefly but left as normal. No disturbances occurred and about 800 students were enrolled with a jovial mood among races.
A young mother Mrs Barbara Wussow 23 and her daughters Lynne 315 and Lou Ann 12 perished in a farmhouse blaze. Mrs Wussow was found near the back door as she apparently tried to rescue her children.
Dulles and Lloyd held a 90 minute meeting at the American Embassy residence and reported real progress toward an agreed Middle East canal policy. They discussed clearing the canal and future operation while NATO ministers prepare to convene this week.
Polly battered southern Luzon with 80 mph winds leaving at least three dead and 32 missing as two barges sank off southeastern Luzon, according to the bureau of customs.
The United States and 15 other nations urged the UN General Assembly to condemn the Soviet Union for depriving Hungary of independence. The draft calls for immediate Soviet withdrawal under UN observation and reestablishment of Hungary’s political independence. The resolution is sponsored by Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, El Salvador, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand and the United States.
A Trans-Canada Air Lines four engine plane carrying 62 aboard vanished after leaving Vancouver Sunday night in a 50 mph wind storm. The search began at dawn with air and ground parties from Chilliwack and Abbotsford area. Passengers included four members of the Saskatchewan football team. Captain Allan Clarke, 35, of Montreal, was piloting the craft which turned back after engine trouble near Hope. None of the passengers were from Wisconsin.
Report from Vienna says about 10 000 Hungarian freedom fighters of the Corvin legion battled Soviet troops in the Gelert and Buda hills north of Budapest. Maj Gen Bela Karoly reportedly led the fighters against Russian tanks and infantry after martial law was declared and the Kadar regime cracked down on regional councils and a general strike.
Gen. Max D. Taylor, Army chief of staff, told the Union League Club that U S strategy must adapt to unforeseen situations rather than rely on a single weapon or future war concept. He urged both land forces and mass destruction nuclear arms as essential, noting small wars could lead to larger conflicts if unchecked.
The administrative committee of the state Democratic Party met Sunday and unanimously adopted a resolution opposing a state sales tax in any form. The resolution reiterated the committee's past opposition to a sales tax.
Two armed bandits entered a downtown tavern and forced bartender Ralph J. Leonard to fill a bag with more than $2,100 in weekend receipts. Leonard, held at gunpoint in the storeroom, freed by officers after police were alerted, described the duo as taller and shorter accomplices.
Union leaders today proposed a settlement package to end the county employees strike. The plan includes a 6 cent hourly raise, reinstatement of the cost of living factor with quarterly CPI adjustments, a 2 cent reserve to address inequities, and adherence to seniority in the new agreements. If inequities persist, a 10-man committee reports in 30 days and an arbitrator is possible after 50 days. Courthouse workers and other unions have yet to accept or take further action.
The National Safety Council cataloged a year 1954 of freak accidents with odd injuries and mishaps. A gopher bomb incident burned hay, a dog triggered a shotgun wound to a dog catcher, a hunter was shot in the knee by a misfired rifle, a man lit a firecracker and claimed he quit smoking, a car crashed into a home, and a writer tripped over a lion’s head breaking an arm. In Chicago a puffed lip misfire and a Christmas package first aid kit caused minor injuries.
Union leaders from Kenosha’s two main labor bodies and several large locals condemned the county board’s plan to seek an injunction against peaceful picketing at the courthouse and county home. The statement warns the measure could trigger a grave labor crisis and enable strike-breaking by hiring scab labor.
Premier Chou En-lai of Red China arrived in Rangoon Burma from India for a ten day goodwill visit. He received a warm welcome as his party began the tour.
Malcolm Lee Beggs a 45 year old New York actor in the touring company of No Time for Sergeants was beaten to death in his 16th floor La Salle Towers apartment by two teenage companions Robert Mitchell 19 of St. Louis and Haskell Ray Kellems 18 of Evansville Ind. They met Beggs Sunday night in the Loop and went to his room to rob him early today. The youths fled after the attack. neighbors heard a scuffle and police found Beggs in a blood smeared room.
