Defective wiring likely caused an eight thousand dollar blaze at the Toggery last Friday night. Water and smoke damaged stock, with insulation from a center light spreading flames. Insurance covers losses. repairs will begin once stock is moved. Bellows will reopen next to the post office with a fire sale and expanded stock including a women’s department.
A Thursday storm blew through the city with high winds and dust, tearing down signs and damaging buildings. The Hotel Kennewick electric sign was loosened, a bank front collapsed, and a large signboard was ripped up. A brick section fell through a roof at Williams block, scattering debris in Commercial Hall. Temperature dropped from 95 to 58 in under an hour. At Vista a box car derailed and slid along the track. a freight car on the Paterson line traveled 14 miles hitting a passenger train clearing the engine was bruised. No injuries reported.
A city council regular session ended with four members present. The Beach addition irrigation estimate sheets were accepted though final payments remain unpaid. Much of the session focused on town agricultural conditions and recommendations to the health department to prevent disease.
A halftone shows Bing cherries from Harry Hilbert at Tweedt place in Garden Tracts. Manager Collins notes Kennewick cherries rival strawberries, with Bing leading varieties and prices rising to about 84 cents per pound. He urges planting Bing only and calls for nursery stock regulation to curb fraud.
Kennewick traveled to Prosser and won 5 to 3 in a tight pitched contest. Fatty Taylor hit the only Prosser homer, the longest ball seen there, as Larkin allowed four hits and fanned ten for Kennewick while Sipes faced ten Kennewick batters and struck out eleven for Prosser with brace of costly errors in the late innings. A deciding game is expected soon to settle the series.
The first shipment of early peaches arrived yesterday from White Bluffs. Two boxes were consigned to the Seattle market through the Fruit Growers' Association. The Mayflower variety was grown by Bonn Bros.
Readers may guess the winning store advertisement lineup to win merchandise. Entries must be mailed or phoned. correct guesses receive a number drawing at 1 30 Saturday afternoon. Last week’s profile was Miss Ruby Staugenhaupt. winner was O Noben.
The committee publishes a full Fourth of July schedule with sun up to night events. Sunday schools will lead a parade with floats and a prize banner based on enrollment. Miss Columbia may lead the grand floats while Scott Henderson coordinates parade formation. The day includes races on Yakima street, an afternoon ball game for $50, a bronco bucking contest, and a grand Kiwanis parade entry at 8 p.m.
Taft control at the Chicago convention appears slim for final nomination. Credentials report favors Taft about three to one with 78 Taft delegates seated, including 14 from Washington. If deadlock persists, Hughes or Hadley could be drafted. Roosevelt faction debates a separate August nomination if Taft falls short.
Fire destroyed a stable on the A Nevlow property in Section 7 on Tuesday evening. Loss estimated at 300 dollars, partly insured, with damage to building, contents, and stored household goods. blaze possibly started by spontaneous combustion of oily rags. Nevlow’s car was away at the time.
