Eighth Illinois Infantry Passes Through Kansas City in Trains
The Eighth Illinois Infantry Color Guard with Negro officers, 1,600 strong, traveled via three special trains through Kansas City at 5:00 p.m. Sunday bound for the border. A crowd of Colored residents, disappointed by not seeing their trains at Union Station, greeted them in yards at Argentina. The unit is officered by Colonel Franklin A. Dennison and Lt Colonel James H. Johnson among others. A reception for Rev. H. Parks of the Fifth Episcopal district is set for July 12, 1916 at Allen Chapel in Kansas City, with a program of prayers, music, and welcomes by church and community leaders.

Beginning Monday July 10 the Negro Business League of Greater Kansas City will host a week long Preparedness Carnival at Lincoln Electric Park to boost the August visit of the National Negro Business League. Special attractions include a high diver and other acts as boosters are invited to attend. The event aims to entertain and raise support during the week. The Lynching Record for the First Six Months of 1916: Tuskegee Institute reports 25 lynchings, 28 Negroes and 2 Whites, with rape cited in five cases, reflecting a decline from 1915.
