House backs an 83,163,500 river basin project with drainage and flood control aims in the Missouri Basin. The plan, tied to Havre area flood relief, faces funding and scope questions as it moves to enactment.
Congress approved 83.3 million in river and flood control expenditures for the Missouri basin in the current fiscal year ending July 1. Major items include Pick-Sloan dams at Fort Randall and Devil’s Lake region, with Harrison and Oahe reservoirs receiving substantial allocations. The bill also covers levees, channel work, and Omaha protection across South and North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Montana, with Havre Mont. removed from the list.
Washington AP June 15 proponents of the Cedar Bluff Kansas reclamation and irrigation project sought new construction funds. The Senate House conference committee cut $3 million previously approved for interior construction starting July 1. Senator Reed Kansas urged keeping the amount temporarily for study. Backers want the conference to reinstate all or part of the $3 million. Senate report cites a Kansas State College survey noting low rainfall and limited irrigation in the Smoky Hill valley area. Cedar Bluff lies west of the region with lighter rainfall. Senate also boosted funds for Bostwick and St Francis projects in surrounding states.
In Atchison Kansas Viva Jean Cunningham 12 swallowed a tooth after two failed extractions. Doctors in Chicago plan further tests to remove the tooth from her lung, hoping to save her life as a public fund forms at home. The Atchison Globe and employer Earl Berridge helped raise aid as the child battles complications.

In Frankfurt on June 15, the 547th construction battalion will be inducted into the United States Constabulary. This marks the first assignment of Negro soldiers to the highly trained occupation force, with ceremonies held at Grafenwohr.
Spike Jones and Helen Grayco announce plans to marry June 25 in Hollywood after concluding a Las Vegas engagement. Jones, 37, known for his touring stage show, will wed Miss Grayco of Tacoma, Washington. this marks his second marriage.
Coast guard reports three B 17 planes missing on a flight from the Azores to Corsica. They were last heard from at 7 50 this morning, with one radioing that an engine was on fire. The incident occurred during a long Atlantic crossing from New York.
A Santa Fe passenger train traveling from Ash Fork to Phoenix derailed thirteen miles west of Phoenix. Shortly after, an automobile struck spectators at the wreck site, injuring several people. Rail crews cited a broken rail as the likely cause. the locomotive and five coaches derailed but did not overturn.
Detroit June 15 AP The United Automobile Workers won a 13 cent per hour wage increase from Hudson Motor Car Company just before talks with Ford. The agreement covers about 17,000 workers and is retroactive to June 7 pending Local 154 CIO approval. It extends a two year contract with a one year reopen for wages and raises vacation pay to 62.20 for one year service and 124.40 after five years. Additional increases may apply to certain wage groups.
Minnesota presidential hopeful Harold E. Stassen and his wife dined with Col. Robert R. McCormick, editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, at McCormick's Chicago residence. McCormick called the dinner social and said no politics were discussed. he supports Senator Tait for the GOP nomination.
Washington June 15 AP soft coal operators break off contract negotiations with John L Lewis saying they are getting nowhere The Southern Coal Producers association which mines one third of the nations soft coal says it will bar gain with Lewis separately if needed Justice Goldsborough ordered Moody seated in nationwide talks begun last week The breakdown followed May 19 over Moody's participation and the operators cite Lewis insisted on activating the 1947 welfare fund before discussing a new contract.
President Truman is set to reach Kansas City Union Station at 2:30 PM tomorrow on his cross country speaking tour. He will walk through the lobby to a car with Mrs Truman and Margaret, then proceed to Independence for an overnight stay at the Summer White House. A color guard and about 100 local supporters will greet him, and a caravan of Independence cars will transport the party.
President Truman welcomed two Arizona women who attended Independence High School with him aboard his special train to Winslow Arizona. Mrs. Fred N. Holmquist of Phoenix and Mrs. Lester Finch of Phoenix had not seen him in 27 years. Pedestrians in the Fairway district await a maintenance decision on the underpass west of Belvider Road across US 50 in Johnson County. In Goodland Kansas 250 residents lit a makeshift runway with car headlights to guide pilot Jack Knudson as a thunderstorm blocked the airport. The Goodland businessman circled the town after weather forced him to land, unable to read CAA codes until they shone a spotlight signal. He landed safely at 8 45 p m, after the field was lit and directed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration.

Senate and House measures would require 18 year olds to register with local boards but not enter service immediately. 18 year olds could join reserve units or the national guard to gain draft exemptions while remaining in drills. Senate plan recruits up to 161000 youths for a year of training then moves them to reserves for six years. House plan enlists 18 year olds only for regular terms. High school students would be deferred until completion or age 20. College students could finish the school year.
Two trans continental long distance telephone cables cut near Chappell Nebraska were repaired after workmen damaged lines while scooping dirt for a dam. The cables carried about 800 long distance lines and 300 telegraph circuits. The Northwestern Bell Telephone Co announced the restoration today.
The operators Ernest H. Evans and Kenneth W. Wallace, aged 31 and 23, will face municipal court on careless driving charges after a crash at Nineteenth Street and Grand Avenue that injured 31 people. Both were suspended pending the outcome of court hearings and internal investigations.
