The university will drop Speech 27, Physical Education 56, Philosophy 104, Music 22, Art 32, Latin 12, Religion 110, and German 108. New courses include Speech 192 Radio speaking and Philosophy 108 Development of American Philosophy. Unsold, camp counseling, and gym courses courted. Calendar items list events through January 15.
Starting in the second semester this year a voluntary physical exercise course will be offered to senior boys to prepare them for conscription. It will not include military training but will provide vigorous activity such as running wrestling and rope climbing. Classes meet two hours weekly for no credit. Mr. Robinson will instruct.
A list of courses with credits and times appears including Art 34 on modern painters and artists, Remedial English no credit, Web Mathematics 22 Descriptive Geometry three hours, and Art 12 studio art with a Wednesday block or special hour by Mr. Wilke.
The First Presbyterian Church hosts a Student Fellowship Sunday featuring The Bishops Candlesticks an adaptation from Les Miserables. Clark Bouwman directs Bill Doelle George Bouwman Barbara Moore Grace Clark Russell Becker and others in the cast with Walter Yoder leading devotions and Ingeborg Heinried at the piano. A five student group will tour Muskegon Heights churches during the weekend. Meetings run 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
Kalamazoo College announces a weekly placement feature by the Faculty Committee on Placement. Listings include an accountant opening and two sales or training program positions at an aluminum firm oil firm and a large chain store. Interested graduates may inquire at the Placement Office Bowen telephone 24816.
The Kalamazoo Civic Players present I Killed the Count opening January 15 for a four night run. Alec Coppel wrote the mystery with new dramatic technique, delivering rapid climaxes and audience participation, featuring J. Murray Scott as Viscount Sorrington and Jack Moffat as Inspector Davidson among a cast including Eva Landecker Corinne Bennett Louise Rogers and Sebastian Bonet as Count Vittori Matt Toni.
The column jokes about dictionary quagmires and petrog definitions in a humorous chat. It playfully navigates terms like hornblende schist and amphibolite, lampooning corners of lore, footnotes, and the trap of see references. Continued on page 4.
On January 15 non-members may attend the Philoloxian Lyceum open meeting at 7:30 in the Philo club room Bowen Hall. The society, founded in 1855, is the campus second oldest. The program is secret but promised interesting, with refreshments served.
President Paul Lamont Thompson attends the Association of American Colleges annual meeting in Pasadena with plans to be in California through the month. He also joined the National Conference of Church Related Colleges held January 7 in Pasadena with Mrs Thompson.
College radio hour on WKZO airs January 11 with The 41 er informal dance. Student announcers Frances Tries and Eula Besemer introduce programs through January 29 including Women and Sports and K College Forum with Jack Montgomery and Dr Arnold Mulder hosting Book Shelf segment.
Natalie Peterson reports the senior class sponsors The ’41-er dance to start 1941 campus activities. January 11 at 8 30 to 1 30 in Welles Hall ballroom with The K Club orchestra and intermission refreshments. Chaperones Mr and Mrs Staake and Dean Gilmer Robinson.
Bill Sorensen assistant dormaster and Todd Gilmore Fellowship holder has left college during Christmas vacation to start temporary work in the civilian personnel service of the United States army. He will become a regular Junior Administrator after the assignment ends. Sorensen is from Muskegon and earned an A B in Political Science at Kalamazoo College last spring. Dr. Robert Cornell says a successor for the Todd Gilmore Fellowship will be named next month.

The United States Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive examination for Junior Professional Assistant positions at $2,000 a year. It targets recent graduates for junior professional and scientific Federal posts with optional branches such as biologist, engineer, geologist, meteorologist, and economist. Applicants need a four year college degree with relevant major study. seniors or graduate students may apply.
Geneveive Crandall has accepted the Senate appointment as manager of forensics and attended yesterday's luncheon of the student governing body. Bill Culver shifts to a Men's Union representative role. With the Men's Union now a legal campus group, its president joins the Senate automatically. The Pi Kappa Delta report was given by the new forensics manager and the next Senate meeting is set for Friday January 17 at 10 00 a.m.
Director of music Henry Overley will address the Western Michigan chapter of the American Guild of Organists in Grand Rapids next Saturday. His talk titled Constant values in a changing world evaluates modern music both serious and vernacular. The address repeats a November talk given before the Michigan Music Teachers Association in Battle Creek.
