Boiling Pot staff urge complete $3.50 payment by February 10 to have the student’s name inscribed on the yearbook cover. The window remains open for spring copies, with photographers capturing winter scenes and reminders to submit photos to Betty Tuller, Luel Simmons, or Maggie McCrimmon.
Kappa Pi and pledges hosted the annual tea on Wednesday afternoon in the Kappa room from three to five o'clock. Eleanor Johnson, Kappa president, and Miss Lillian Lennards poured. Harriet Aspergren and Betty Kotteman oversaw arrangements as members and faculty guests attended in good numbers.
About 40 history instructors and students from Michigan church related colleges attend the annual history conference in Kalamazoo. Dr. D L Dumond of the University of Michigan will speak after a 6 pm dinner in Welles Hall following student papers read this afternoon in Mandelle Library. Delegates come from all MIAA colleges. two volumes edited by Dumond under the Beveridge Memorial Fund.
The Sherwood men's society hosts its first formal of the year on January 13 at the Kalamazoo Park Club. The dance runs 9 PM to midnight with Bob Drake and his Country Club orchestra. Trowbridge residents admitted to late hours. Plans by William Lawrence with Frank Southon and Jim Cloney. Chaperones include Dr. and Mrs. Will Kissick and Mr. Stanley Townsend.
The Kalamazoo College Index recounts the 1911 1912 buildup to a basketball team, noting coach Mather’s 1912 start, 16 players, practice at Normal’s gym, and early wins over Central High School and Company C. Ed Boseman was elected captain January 17 1912 amid floor shortages.
Miss Hisako Fujiwara a young Japanese woman will speak at Student Fellowship Sunday evening in the First Congregational church. A Mills College California graduate she studies economics at the University of Michigan and holds a Barbour scholarship. She speaks as a representative of Christianity in Japan not a political program advocate. The period begins at 6 with fellowship and refreshments, devotions, hymn singing, special music and the address, closing at 7 30.
Election of courses for the second semester runs January 10 to January 20. Faculty advisers provide blanks, and the official time schedule is available at the Registrar's Office next Monday. The new election blank records elections and class hours.
On January 10 the Department of Speech hosts the Twin Valley debate tournament with forty high school participants from Albion Coldwater Marshall and Hillsdale. Debates run in two rounds scheduled by Jewel Starkweather. After the debates guests dine at Welles Hall hosted by Mr Everett Hames and the Department of Admissions.
The Women’s Athletic Association plans a sleigh ride from the gym at 7 30 p m to Plainwell with refreshments along the way. Proceeds fund new skiing equipment and toboggans for the women’s department. Tickets are forty cents from Miriam Brown Margaret Benedict Harriet Aspergren and Barbara Todd.
The Women’s Inter-Society dance set for January 6 is postponed to the next semester. Student organizers cite scheduling conflicts and campus event crowding as the reason.
A Kalamazoo College debate group will travel to Illinois Normal University for an invitational tournament on January 12 and 13. Dr and Mrs Judson travel with the team including Eula Besemer Pauline Thompson Elise Stroud Genevieve Crandall Jewel Starkweather Bud Cain Ed Thompson Dick Miles Ed Van Dyke and Bill Sorenson. They will visit the Judsons home this Sunday for final trip planning.
Open House at College Grove next Sunday from four to seven in the afternoon marks the inauguration of a new college era. Faculty members invite all students to visit any home or two they prefer to meet faculty outside the classroom. Readied invitations include a small map showing each host. At Home hosts listed: Dr and Mrs Dunbar Dr and Mrs Goodsell Dr and Mrs Cornell Dr and Mrs Hornbeck Mr and Mrs Hames Dr and Mrs Hemmes Dr and Mrs Mulder.
Since December 16, 1939, Kalamazoo College Civilian Pilot Training students have not flown. Instructor Ray Rumpler and non-student Louis Rea crashed during a forced landing. Rumpler is hospitalized with a fractured back, Rea injured only lightly, and the trainer wrecked. Rumpler, a longtime transport pilot and C A A inspector, reports this as his first crash.
Jean Webster attends the Student Christian Conference at the University of Toronto in Canada from December 27 to January 1. A joint faculty and student committee selected a Kalamazoo College representative for the Northern Baptist Convention delegates, choosing Jean as one delegate. The student committee plans to arrange an address for the student body.
Dr. Hornbeck and Dr. Seifert participated in the American Association for the Advancement of Science gathering in Columbus. The event drew over forty affiliated societies and featured lectures by leaders including Wesley Mitchell Isaiah Bowman and Julian Huxley and a large science exhibit at the Civic Auditorium.
Dr Lyman Judson attended the National Association of Teachers of Speech and American Educational Theater Association conventions at the Stevens hotel in Chicago from December 27 to 29.
