In a printed interview Greta Garbo is quoted about five percent of viewers being unintelligent for going to the theatre. The writer muses on theatre motives and notes lingering ultra conservatives. A streetcar accident is recounted and a road plan for a forty foot wave is discussed alongside a 1933 model car with black and yellow stripes.
A newspaper report notes the Rockefeller Foundation has given Yale University several million dollars. The donation is described as a major grant likely to influence university programs and fundraising efforts.
Reports from the sheriff and tax collector show 152 vehicles registered to date for 19383 with January days left. Last year 711 licenses were paid by February 1, and many expect registrations to be notably lower this year. A son was born to Mrs Libby Holman Reynolds widow of Smith Reynolds at the Pennsylvania hospital Tuesday.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation announces eight thousand dollars has been allotted to Kimble County for unemployed relief during January and February. A committee will go to Sweetwater Saturday for details on when funds will be available and public works projects. Unemployed residents should register at the city hall in the coming days. Further information will follow after the committee returns.
The Boy Scouts of the West Texas and Concho Valley Council mark the 23rd Boy Scout Week February 8 to 14 with daily programs and a kickoff event at 8 15 p m on February 5 The week includes Scout Sunday February 12 and aims to enroll two million new citizens by 1942 Four Eagle badges will be presented at Courts of Honor in the Concho Valley Council to Desmond Hammer Hugh Lee Gober Jarvis Jordan and Overby Smith all from local troops Local scouts plan observances in San Angelo Pr y Junction and surrounding areas.
The Segovia Sunday School will meet at 2 30 a m with Rev W Crofoot preaching to follow. Guy Munn avoided a truck trip after being overcome by fumes near Segovia on Monday night returning from San Antonio He recovered after rest and aid from Gay Munn who helped.
In Mrs Lanan Bissett’s absence, Mrs Ek. R. Borden presided at the Neal Parentiescher Association meeting held in the high school study hall. Miss Nellie Ben liliteracy led devotional. program included literacy, thrift, child spiritual training, and parliamentary instruction. Business focused on amending the constitution for March officer elections and dues payments.
Mrs T C Harris died at her East Junction home after a several day illness of bronchial pneumonia. She was born in Brantley Alabama August 20 1868 and later moved to Texas. Surviving children include Julia Meador Mildred Baker Jim Harris Tom Harris Josie Stapp and Eula Stanley with other relatives. Funeral was in Junction Cemetery officiated by Rev G W Rich.
Chris Schraub and his relatives are all able to be up after a surge of the flu. They report recovering and resuming daily activities as clinics note improving case counts in the area.
A letter from Love Field Dallas reports John Barnes formerly of Junction is making good progress in the Aviation School and Air College in Dallas.
At the Junction Rotary luncheon pupils from Junction High School spoke on state taxes. Overby Smith Jarvis Jordan and Miss Melba Stephenson highlighted tax phases with clear grasp, impressing local business leaders. Superintendent George H Mitchell praised the students and said the program gives youth real insight into government at city state and national levels.
At the Junction State Bank annual meeting held January 5 the old directors were re-elected and in turn re-elected all officers. The bank is described as in excellent condition and ready to provide satisfactory service to Junction and Kimble County. The Junction Cattie Loan Company stockholders meeting was postponed until February.
Warm rains and sunshine lift range conditions in Kimble County. Grass growth accelerates and livestock are moved off ranges temporarily. A cold northerday brings a temperature drop but no severe weather expected. Colder weather is needed to delay fruit tree budding. Overall farm and ranch prospects are good.
George Holekamp 86 of Comfort died last Saturday and was buried there. Attending the funeral were E Holekamp C T Holekamp and Alec Hamer. His sister Mrs Paul Karger died December 23 and Mr Karger died January 10. The family, pioneer residents of Comfort, loses three members in weeks. Mansel Smith improves after a serious accident when a road maintainer toppled on him near the Knoxville road. He suffers a broken leg and broken ribs and remains in Standifer Hospital. A wrecker freed the machine from his body and he will be off work for weeks.
The Taylor county Home Demonstration Council has opened a farm home makers market to supply surplus farm products and canned goods. It will operate every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
Coke R. Stevenson of Junction in Kimble County won the Texas House speakership in a 52 to 68 vote over A P Johnson of Dimmit County in the opening session. The election was by secret ballot with six tellers guarding the boxes. Stevenson was sworn in by Secretary of State Jane Y. McCallum as the House organized and adjourned, with Governor-elect Miriam A. Ferguson and family showing support. The Senate re-elected Bob as secretary and adjourned after routine business.
Fort Worth rate expert Harrel Priest died last Saturday at his home of pneumonia. He headed a freight rate bureau at the Fort Worth Livestock Exchange and handled rate cases for the Texa southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and several livestock groups. Survivors include his widow a son Bob and a daughter Ruth, plus four brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held at Riverside Baptist Church.
A Kimble County Chamber of Commerce meeting drew nearly all directors as plans for the annual meeting moved forward with a committee to announce a date. Also noted were health and obituary items including W P Riley returning from San Antonio in critical but improving condition and the death of Pecos county’s oldest white native John M Rooney at Fort Stockton. Gov Ibra C Blackwood commuted the death sentence of Beatrice Ferguson Snipes to life in prison.
The La Junta Study Club will meet on January 18 at the home of Mrs. George Mitchell to discuss club activities and plans.
In 1932 the county clerk recorded 19 marriages while district court granted eight divorces. Of the marriages three involved Mexicans and one Mexican divorce case occurred. seven divorces were for whites.
