Hatchery Gets New Stock From Medina Lake

Local Game Warden S O Durst and deputy Chas Quist collect breeder bass and crappie for Heart of the Hills Hatchery between Junction and Kerrville. Thirty breeding ponds are filling. sixteen cans of crappie breeders are headed for the county, with more to come. Fish from Medina Lake expected to bolster rivers and streams, aiding stocking efforts.

Kerrville Backs 100 Room Hotel Project in Business District

Kerrville plans a $200,000 four story hotel with 100 rooms to rise in the business district. Kerrville citizens underwrite $40,000 plus a $30,000 site donated by Schreiner interests and L. A. Schreiner. R. L. Burney of San Antonio guarantees a $10,000 forfeit to ensure construction. Site faces Water Street with several former homes now offices. Community pledges aim to meet a Monday deadline as negotiations proceed. Police and court activity unrelated to the hotel includes witnesses in the Homer Fleming case in Fredericksburg after venue changes from Llano County to Gillespie County.

Emil A. Loeffler and family visited Alpine and Fort Stockton to inspect roadwork on the Old Spanish Trail. He notes roads west of Sonora are in excellent condition, countering guides that warned of impassable stretches, and criticizes information bureaus for steering tourists to longer routes.

Rev Dekle Preaches at Evergreen for Attentive Crowd

South Llano News reports Rev. Dekle preached at Evergreen Sunday afternoon to a good crowd. Visitors from Junction accompanied him and hopes for another visit are raised. The Paint Creek school has 18 pupils under Mrs. Johnson. Farmers request rain in windy, drying weather. Many community members attend events and travel between Junction, Menard, and Fredericksburg for work and court.

Expert Pecan Grower Visits in Junction

Ross R. Woolfe a Mason County native turned Erath County nurseryman visited Junction on Sunday. He toured native pecan orchards with N. H. Skaggs and Mr. Brison and proposed thinning bottoms to give each bearing tree a 100 foot cleared radius, top working only thrifty trees, and soil cultivation with irrigation where feasible to curb pests and conserve moisture. He also cited cossation and thinning as key to preventing case bearer damage.

Lynch Davidson Announces New Texas Governorship Bid

In San Antonio Lynch Davidson declares he will inject a key issue into the gubernatorial race. He attacks the highway probe scandal and the current primary system, urging first and second choice balloting. He plans to open his campaign next week in an East Texas town.

Former Kimble County Woman Dies in Castro

Ruth Haberer born Ruth Cowsert in Junction in 1900 died January 12 at Big Square Castro County and was buried in Dimmitt. She was daughter of Mark and the Cowsert family who moved from Kimble County sixteen years ago. She studied at C I A and West Texas Normal before marrying Haberer in 1921. Her brother is John Cowsert and cousin Nat Consert lives nearby. Many local relatives mourn her untimely death.

Length of Staple Increases Weight in Sheep Study

Kerr County boys organize sheep clubs under J C Yeary. A farm boy fed and cared for registered sheep, convincing his father to switch from grade stock after a year. U S Department of Agriculture findings show fleece weight grows with longer staple, with Rambouillet study indicating staple length has stronger impact than density. Breeders can raise staple length while maintaining fleece density. Kerrville Mountain Sun reports.
