A light column notes a coming California country fair featuring a dog calling contest, jokes about two-footed spectators, Henry Ford on wealth, a World War book mentioning cooties, public office examinations in Washington, high prices for prize animals, and thoughts on stairs as exercise.
Dock Bodkin and colleagues from West Texas Utilities visited this week to discuss business. Sheriff Graham found a bottle of liquor and a six shooter in a car during a sales visit involving Chas McCarroll and W P Emmons. Investigators concluded the liquor and gun were planted as a joke. Bodkin paid the mayoral judge after tasting the evidence. others appeared unaware.
At a regular meeting the commissioners court chose The State Bank of Junction as depository for county funds for two years. The court also selected Dr. L. E. Standifer as county health officer.
Heart of Texas Dental Society members from Junction Men ard Brady San Saba Mason Liano and Fredericksburg gathered in Mason last Saturday. Dr A C Bowman Llano was elected president Dr J Holt Smith Junction vice president and Dr Paul Inglesdue Mason re elected secretary for the year. The society meets every two months with the April meeting in Llano and June in Junction. Dr Smith and his son Overby attended the Mason gathering.
Joe Ganzara of New York City fired on a crowd in Miami after Franklin D Roosevelt finished speaking. Roosevelt was uninjured though Mayor Anton Cermak and three others were wounded. Ganzara was arrested after the attempt. The incident followed a plan to kill the president and officials. Roosevelt canceled plans to depart for New York and visited the wounded before leaving.
The Junction Lions Club met in the County Courtroom with 11 members present led by Judge R R King. A resolution backed continuing the Game Fish and Oyster Commission. Luncheons are paused but members aim to keep the club active with monthly meetings and a 34 member roll. Segovia Sunday School will meet next Sunday at 2 30 p m followed by Rev G W Crofoot’s sermon. Brice W Draper attended Court of Honor as Overby Smith and Jarvis Jordan earned Eagle Scout badges.
Anniversary week of the Boy Scouts closed with a Court of Honor where more than twenty scouts were awarded advancement badges. Brice W. Draper led the event for the Concho Valley Council with Chris Schraub presiding. Awards went to tenderfoot Walter Colier and others advancing to second class, first class, and merit badges. Junction Troop earned the Hoover Award for increasing membership.
From the daily press it is learned that Joe Turner has been appointed one of the three scabies inspectors by Governor Miriam A Ferguson. Turner is a warm Ferguson supporter and is noted for qualifications that suit the post. He is well known throughout stockraising regions.
Mr and Mrs Russell Lavelle of Junction on their honeymoon in San Antonio blushed as detectives solved a two day case involving a believed theft of their auto and several hundred dollars in clothing. Lavelle had parked the car with suitcases two days earlier and thought it vanished, but detectives Hice and Littlepage traced it to a different hotel location revealing a simple memory error.
A Ford truck loaded with fruit plunged 20 feet from the South Llano bridge into the river near Carl bad. Patton and Chandler escaped unharmed though the vehicle was crushed and railing damaged. Brakes wet and lights failing as the turn was made. 40 feet of railing torn, fruit scattered, crowd watched as work crews cleared the scene.
County Clerk Ramsey Randolph has issued three marriage licenses this year. The licenses granted were Raymon Schneider and Veola Wahl on February 4, Russell Lavelle and Helen Craddock on February 11, with a third license to an out of town couple withheld from publication. Texas livestock and agricultural interests asked the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation of Fort Worth for 3935 loans totaling 21 555 470. During the four months ending January 31, 701 loans aggregating 3 706 480 73 were received. The fortunes of oil promoter Seymour E Jacobson Cox, once jailed in Leavenworth, Kansas, were again discussed Monday night.
Reports on Sunday say 70 000 people were killed in a major earthquake in Kansu Province China. Foreigners reaching Peiping conveyed the desolated area and casualty estimates from the afflicted region.
At a school board meeting this week Superintendent George H. Mitchell was re elected for another year and Earl Bowers was re elected principal of the high school. Mitchell completes his second year as superintendent and Bowers his fifth as principal. The school is performing well despite finances. Both leaders and all teachers are praised for their faithful service. Other teachers to be elected later.
President Hoover rallies Republicans to back a new administration and warns of a looming global economic war. He calls for immediate reestablishment of gold standards among key nations as a preventive measure.
The Roosevelt Schoolhouse hosts a Sunday night service at 7 30 led by Rev G W Crofoot. The invitation urges all to attend and join in the worship event.
Mrs W S Highsmith entertained the Senior Class of the Methodist S S Wednesday evening at the rink aided by Misses Madeline Ragland and Mae Delle Lowry. About 45 youths attended with games skating and refreshments of sandwiches cake and cocoa.

Leeds England February report details Arthur Gill whose golf ball accidentally killed a man earlier that Monday. Grief over the incident led Gill to suffer a heart seizure after returning to the clubhouse. Separately, Mrs J M Livingston visits sister Mrs Noah Smith in San Antonio.
