A fragmented nostalgic ramble on old motoring life. The writer belittles nuts holding cars together then devolves into anecdotes about a modest girl who won t strip her gears. He recalls a talking sign board on a highway and muses on travel and wealth.
Opening day crowd sees Mason rally from a 6 3 deficit to win 14 6 over Junction at the new Hill Country League ball park. Ragland shut down Junction after three, while Mason bats explode late as Brown Schmidt Tomberlin and others contribute.
Wet ground in parts limits plowing while conditions worsen in Junction. March rainfall measured only .61 inches, with several days of unfavorable growing weather. Wind remains high and cool, but grass and weeds grow. a warm rain would help crops.
In Forty-ninth District Court, John A. Walls, district attorney, disposed of eight criminal cases in 40 minutes. Two defendants received suspended sentences, three were fined for driving while intoxicated, three were sentenced to jail, and one failure to stop and render aid case was continued on first application.
A seven passenger transport airplane covered the 240 mile Tulsa to Dallas route in 68 minutes despite dust laden winds, setting a new speed record for the run.
In the election last Saturday Chris Schraub was re elected as a trustee of the Junction Independent School District. He was not a candidate but voters re elected him for long faithful service. Joe Maddux won to succeed Lester Hodges who served years as secretary. Other board members include Jim Carpenter C W Mc Carroll Dr J Holt Smith R H Loeffler and Calvart Reid.
The Akron disaster prompts a look back at major airship accidents over the past two decades. From the 1912 balloon Akron blast to later disasters like the Italia in 1928 and the Shenandoah in 1925, many airships including Zeppelins L-1 and L-2 suffered fatal failures, with dozens dead in each incident.
Members of the Order of the Eastern Star are urged to attend a meeting at the Masonic Hall next Tuesday evening April 13 when Mrs Hallie Anglin deputy grand matron will make her official visit to the chapter here.
Dr. and Mrs. J. Fred Burt returned this week from a business trip to San Antonio and surrounding areas. Dr. Burt reports good rains in several places visited.
Mrs. Etta W. Ringgold began duties as home demonstration agent for Kirhle Sutton and Edwards counties on April 1. She planned an irrigation demonstration on April 26 and advocates year round gardening with proper cultivation. Ringgold brings wide Texas experience across four counties and earlier work in Live Oak County. Emphasis includes ranch food supply via gardens and animal product industries such as wool and mohair preparation for home use.
W C Bradshaw of Abilene longtime Junction resident recalls early history. He arrived in 1877 to a single store on the public square run by Bob Clark and worked as a West Texan typesetter printed by Lewis. After six months Junction had two stores and five saloons.
Schraub's Hardware Store has been remodeled and improved to look like a new store. The ceiling lights and fixtures were painted and enameled in new colors. Stock has been rearranged to enhance appearance. Mr Schraub supports Roosevelt's new deal and aims to start growth with his business.
The regular Parent-Teacher Association meeting will be held in the high school building next Wednesday at 3 30 pm. The program includes Scripture Reading Piano Solo Reading and talks by Dr L E Stancifer and Edwina Longren. Members urged to attend in full.
Junction welcomes Ollie Floyd as the new local manager of West Texas Utilities Company. Mrs Floyd and the little Floyd are warmly received as Mr and Mrs Floyd return after residing elsewhere for several months among friends.
H E Wright elected mayor of Junction after a 167 vote city election. Alton Mason George Cavaness Roy Skaggs Cleve Stephen and Chas Ramsey join the new council with the old members Mason and Cavaness. R E McKay wins city marshal with 68 votes. New council likely sworn in next week. The Eagle has not learned if the council will commission the marshal-elect.
A high school auditorium program of one act plays directed by M I B Loeffler offered a Friday evening benefit to fund the team for Ballinger. The lineup included The Obstinate Family, Black Silas, The Londonderry Air, and a costume number from the 1850s, with performers Christine Schraub Melba Stephenson Nancifred Duderstadt Lorena Henderson and others.
The Junction High School may enter a student speaker in the Fifteenth Annual West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention at Big Spring May 11 12 13. Contest rules require original home town speeches under five minutes with no poetry. The Ethridge loving cup goes to the winner, Wichita Falls student Joe Witherspoon Jr. holding the cup for three years. Top three contestants receive cash prizes and scholarships for the winner.
Ben Hasse, a mutton goat dealer, bought and shipped nearly 2000 goats this week. He paid about 50 cents each, purchasing 242 from E E Bolt, 242 from A L Mudge, 500 from Max Martin, and 1200 from J P Reily, all shipped to Laredo. Since last fall he has shipped over 25,000 goats, mostly to Mexico.
The Gann Grocery Company adds white sanitary counters to its store improving appearance and convenience. Patrons can select their own groceries at the new counters. Mr Woodward notes a painting campaign will enhance the store’s beauty.
The little daughter and son of Superintendent and Mrs. George H. Mitchell had their tonsils removed at Standifer Hospital this week in a minor surgical procedure.
The junior girls performed March studies with Fay Wahl winning first place. Florence Ellen Sheppard and Margaret Barnes tied for second, June Fay Campbell third, Mildred Cavaness fourth. Elizabeth Wright excelled in a bass staff word contest with Patricia Patterson second. A camp fire supper closed the afternoon.
The Evergreen Community Sunday school meets next Sunday at 2 30 in the Evergreen Schoolhouse. Immediately after the class period the Rev G W Crofoot will preach. Come and bring others with you.
