Fire Chief Calvin Royce Assistant Chief Thomas Ruddy and four firemen escaped harm when a fire truck’s right front wheel failed on Cass Street near the Des Plaines river. Chauffeur Joseph Shay steered to the curb stopping the vehicle before it plunged from the bridge. Police traced three mysterious false alarms to a lone woman in a buggy at fire boxes.
