Authorities report a cruel spree of dog poisonings has killed more than a dozen dogs in Jefferson sections. The piece includes, arguments about dog loyalty and a Vest quotation on a dog’s steadfast friendship, with continued on back page.
The Jessie Alien Wise Garden Club schedules April Pilgrimage tours on April 23 and 24. Highlights include Freeman Plantation Catalpa Villa and Exgrelsior Hotel on Saturday, and Olde Jefferson House Guarding Oak The Manse Ben Epperson House and the Museum on Sunday. The Excelsior will open both days along with the old George Jay Gould Rail road car. Admission is two dollars per tour with stage shows and a parade planned for the weekend.
Seaman Robert J. Chambliss of Jefferson serves on the destroyer USS Arnold J. Isbell, part of the U S Seventh Fleet, in the Tachen Islands evacuation. The Isbell became the first U S combatant to enter the area on February 7 and aided in a February 9 rescue of a Navy Skyraider crew after anti aircraft fire.
The Northeast Texas Hereford Association will stage its fourth annual spring sale of registered Hereford cattle in Daingerfield on Thursday March 10. Fifty head are consigned including 34 bulls and 16 females with prominent bloodlines such as Zato Heir and Proud Mixer. The show starts at 9 a.m. judged by Joe Weedon with Walter Britten as auctioneer at 1 p.m. A $100 Purchase Certificate will be awarded to a winner that can be used to buy a registered Hereford from any association member.
Carl S. Shannon of Wharton, respected Episcopal lay leader, will speak next Wednesday at 7:30 in the Parish House. He will lead a round table discussion on church matters after the address as part of Lent programs announced by the rector with an open invitation to the public.
McLeod defeated Avinger 45 to 25 on a neutral Jefferson High School court in the district 52 B girls playoff. Iris Patterson led McLeod with 23 points as Linda McKinney and others contributed for Avinger. Avinger ended the season 13 6. McLeod moved to 85 1 in district play under coach J C Willis.
Mr and Mrs Joan Reynolds of Gideon Missouri announce the engagement of their daughter Donna Jeane to Lt Joe Marvin White son of Mr and Mrs A Stanford of Jefferson The First Methodist Church of Gideon Missouri will host the wedding this summer.
Mrs. T J Taylor I hosted the 033 Study Club at her home Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Charles Hogue as co host. During the business session a resignation from Mrs Paul Hender son Wes was accepted with regret. A Texas program was presented featuring Mrs Drue Hellums on Pirate Jean Lafitte and Mrs A L Williamson on Texas folklore. Seven refreshments were served to a long list of attendees.
Mayor Dan Lester and the City Council announced an April 5 election for the mayoral seat. Candidates must file by March 5 at city hall with the city secretary. Lester’s name will appear on the ballot for the single mayoral race.
Miss Annette Lemmon a Sam Houston State College graduate will teach home economics in Anahuac Texas schools at mid term. Her mother Mrs Nettie Mae Lemmon and Migs Lemmon traveled to Anahuac with Mrs W K Gibbs of Bryan Texas accompanying them.
The IRS announces a 1 percent monthly penalty on underpayments for deposits under the new depositary receipt system. Taxpayers with Form 941 or 720 reportable taxes over 100 dollars in a month must deposit by the 15th of the following month for Form 941 and by the last day of the following month for Form 720. Depositary receipts are required with quarterly returns and available from Federal Reserve Banks or government-depositary banks. Longview IRS staff will answer questions about requirements and penalties.
Watermelon growers are invited to a Saturday meeting at 2 p.m. in the District Court Room to discuss marketing melons. Grange Hall residents attend Friday at 7:30 for a family movie and refreshments. Rabies vaccination plans urge countywide dog immunization with a small fee and dog tags. A demonstration on colony ant control used methyl bromide MC-2. National 4-H Week marks Marion County with thousands of members and local club meetings encouraging hands on demonstrations.
The Rev. Lawton Riley rector of Christ Episcopal Church and Dean of the Northeast Convocation of the Diocese of Texas is named to the Executive Board for Missions by Bishop Coadjutor John E. Hines. The board advises the bishop on missionary and educational work of the diocese.
Mr and Mrs F E Chamberlain announce the birth of Stephen Eugene on eb weighing 6 lbs 5 oz Mrs Chamberlain is former Miss Joan Bell of Jefferson.
The Young Adult Sunday School class at First Methodist Church held a covered dish supper in the Mose ly Hotel dining room to honor the Nielsen family and presented outgoing pastor the Rev Nielsen with a cash gift certificate. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Mosely, Mr. and Mrs. Fant, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. Marks, Mr. and Mrs. Markos, Morris Pentecost, and many others.
The Friday Sewing Club met February 25 at Mrs. L. Simpson's home. Players enjoyed games of 42 and a salad plate hosted by Mrs. Simpson assisted by Mrs. Laird. Attendees included Mrs. P. L. Bass, Mrs. P. M. Bower, Mrs. R. A. Loomis, Mrs. S. S. Minor, and Mrs. J. E. Townley. Next meeting is planned with Mrs. Townley.
Mrs. N. R. Broszio of Marshall will speak at the P T A meeting here on Tuesday night March 8 at 7 30. Her subject will be The Comic Books. The speaker is well grounded on this subject and her talk will be of interest to many. The president Horace Brown notes a nominating committee will be appointed for next year.
Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Suber and family visited Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Harris in Caves Springs on Sunday. Mrs. G. G. Shelton of Texarkana visited Mrs. W. J. Shelton this week. Mrs. Laura Grifford and son with Mr. and Mrs. John Grifford of Shreveport visited Mrs. Grifford's mother Mrs. T. C. Sibley on Sunday. Mrs. Wilma Wilson was in Texarkana Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bagley of Shreveport visited his sister Mrs. Ll. L. Williamson and husband Sunday.
