Bid Set for Ferrells Bridge Dam Project in Missouri
Contract bids were opened for the Ferrells Bridge Dam on Cypress Creek in Marion County Missouri. The Potushnick Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau placed the low bid at 5.758 million dollars among 12 submissions for a earth fill dam 10 600 feet long rising 97 feet above the stream bed. The project aims flood control and a 85 billion gallon reservoir for municipal water supply serving Pittsburg Avinheer Hughes Springs Ore City and Jefferson. Work to begin soon with a 1490 calendar day completion window.

Mrs Jessie Trice Laid To Rest At Oakwood
Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Clyde Trice were held Sunday at First Baptist Church Jefferson with burial at Oakwood Cemetery. She died Friday in a Longview rest home after failing health. Survived by three daughters Mrs Henry Knight and Mrs L C Ritter and Mrs Henry Dobbins, two sons L E Trice and Richard C Trice, one sister Mrs John Markos, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers included J A Starling Stenford Floyd Bramlett Prue Freeman Tom Morris Buck Markos E N Cobb and H M Dill.

Jimmy Scudday suffers broken leg in football practice
Jimmy Scudday, out for his first year of football, broke his left leg in a freak training incident Wednesday. He was not involved in a tackle, received emergency care, then moved to North Louisiana Sanitarium in Shreveport for a midline fracture set. Coaches and players rushed to his bedside as his parents Roy and Mrs Scudday awaited updates.

Negro Arrested Here For Burglary At Woodlawn
Odell Williams, 19, a Woodlawn resident, was charged with burglary after deputies say he admitted breaking into a Woodlawn home and stealing a heater a tea kettle and an iron stove. Williams was arrested here and jailed in Marshall on a 2400 dollar bond following an investigation by Deputy Lawrence LaFay prompted by Roberta Walker’s reported theft.

First Bale Of Marion Cotton Brought In
Morris Moore of Judea Community, a Black farmer, brought in the first bale of Marion County cotton for the year. The bale, ginned at Avinger, weighed 560 pounds and sold for 35 cents a pound, earning Moore a $35 bonus in cash. Fire destroys McCain and Son storage building in Avinger
The frame storage and warehouse structure of R L McCain and Son in downtown Avinger burned at about 2 am Friday. The half block long building near the bank and post office housed hay fertilizer and old fixtures. Fire origin undetermined. Loss at 25000, insured in part. Fire crews from Avinger Hughes Springs Lone Star Daingerfield Linden and others helped save nearby buildings. The bank roof and wall suffered damage while the rest of the block was saved by fire walls.
