Reports say transports began Monday but were dragged to a second day. Expect landings Friday and Saturday if plans hold. Washington notes full fleet may be under way toward Santiago with Shafter’s forces due near by Friday noon and debarkation to follow into Friday night and Saturday.
Paris June 15 Count Boniface de Castelane who married Miss Anne Gould of New York dueled with M Henri Turot of the Petite Republique Francaise. Three sword rounds left Turot wounded twice and severely in the right forearm ending the duel. The paper reported an editor’s arrest and further duels loom over libel charges.
Washington June 1. The Senate spent nearly two hours discussing a resolution directing the committee to investigate the disposition of funds appropriated to pay a Methodist Episcopal church South claim. A heated exchange occurred between Chandler and Pasco over remarks about a reception toward the Senate. Major Stahlman, a known lobbyist, reportedly received 100,000 for lobbying the claim, though the Senate believed no lobby contract existed.
