Harvesting of Kansas' largest wheat crop in years is in full swing nationwide except in extreme northern and western counties. Weather has been excellent, with early yields higher in the central region and lower in the eastern third and western Kansas. Some weights reach 60 to 65 pounds per bushel in the great wheat belt of the middle third.

Sloan Saved Millions in Taxes via Personal Holding Firms

Washington June 29 AP A Securities and Exchange Commission expert testified before a congressional tax inquiry committee that Alfred P Sloan Jr chairman of General Motors and Mrs Sloan saved about 1.9 million in taxes from 1934 to 1936 through personal holding companies. Fortas also cited Mrs Wil Nemina du Pont Ross of Mantchanin Del saving 40405 in 1936 via Renappi Corporation plus transfers of homes estates and assets to the company. He named Henry L Doherty president of Cities Service Carter Lupton and Mrs Helen F Raskob among others with similar setups. Fortas noted five Sloan holding companies yielded tax avoidance of 470000 in 1934 425000 in 1935 and 1025000 in 1936. He described Doherty’s firm as a hub for many interests and said the practice amounts to pyramiding portable funds. The committee adjourned until tomorrow.

Missouri to hire Capitol hostess for statehouse

Missouri will employ a capitol hostess after July 1 as the board of the permanent seat of government approves the position. Mrs Nelles T Lasley Shel bina is named for the post at 140 dollars a month to greet visitors and direct staff to keep the statehouse tidy. Governor Stark proposed the idea with approval from Attorney General McKittrick, Treasurer Winn, Secretary Brown, and State Auditor Smith.

Veteran Washington U. teacher to resign after long service

St. Louis reports that Otto Heller, 74, the university's longest serving faculty member, will end his connection with Washington University at term end. A native of Germany he arrived in 1891 as the first German professor and for years held multiple roles including dean, department chair and editor. He plans to write lecture and travel portions of his time.

An Associated Press report notes Britain and France balking at a neutrality patrol for Spanish coasts, with Rome Berlin talks resuming and a hands off Spain sub committee to reconvene Friday.
