Defense cutback proposed by ex officials in Washington
A group of former national security officials led by Paul Warnke proposed shifting 14 billion dollars from defense to domestic programs. They argued Nixon's plan could be trimmed by 14 billion without harming national security, including eliminating 3.1 billion in Southeast Asia aid. The report, issued by the Project on Budget Priorities, cites labor religious and political groups backing reordering national priorities. A separate Tokyo item notes Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka urging cabinet to eat fish daily to reassure the public about mercury pollution risks from seafood aid discussions.
