President Truman joined George H. Moore Jr Henning W Prentis Jr and Henry P Rusk as MU awarded honorary doctor of laws degrees at its 1081st commencement. Frederick Aiddlebush presided over the largest graduating class with about 1900 degree recipients.

Chamber of Commerce pro motion committee names new leaders

Robert Gulock named co chairman and James A. Davis secretary of the industrial promotion committee at a morning organizational meeting. Former chairman Dave Herman was the first of the year. The group planned the year, calling for more story presses and home workers in Jefferson City, as divorce filings and petitions appeared in court.

Deaths Mrs Becklenberg Dies in Chamois

Mrs. Becklenberg 81 died at home in Chamois after lifelong residence there. Born February 26, 1859 near Chamois to Daniel and Hunter families, she was a Catholic. Widowed two years, she leaves three sons Fritz Fulton John August T and four daughters Ada Pondra Tillie Smith Christine Mertens Ethel Woody, plus siblings, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Former Resident Killed in East Liverpool Truck Crash

Joseph Barton, 32, formerly of Capital City, died may 6 in an East Liverpool truck wreck. The vehicle overturned on a home lawn, Barton became trapped and died before rescuers could reach him. His mother, Mrs J C Barton, confirms the tragedy.

The JC Mattress Factory and Furniture store, owned by L. J. Mueller, opens tomorrow on Highway 56 West. The business, previously a mattress factory, has been in operation since 1934. An interspring mattress will be given away to a winner from a visitor registration list. The store offers a full furniture line and can custom make mattresses and box springs, plus renovation and rebuilding services.
