Savings surge top bank deposits as stocks lag in 1964
Washington AP reports that Americans directed most excess income into bank savings during July to September, setting a postwar savings record of 10.7 billion dollars. Deposits rose by 7.9 billion, with a 2 billion rise for securities. Since 1962 stock selling outpaced buying. Medicare enrollment for those over 65 reaches 8,368,587, with 9.4 million processed responses and 15.1 million informed. About 4 million not yet receiving benefits must be contacted before July 1 enrollment deadline.

The Missouri Public Service Commission approved Southwestern Bell Telephone rate reductions led by Chairman William R. Clark. Long distance calls 40 to 200 miles drop 5 cents. evening rate discounts rise from 15 to 25 percent of the day rate. Rural residents with city service gain lower bills, saving about 441000 annually, plus 40000 yearly from eliminated construction charges.
