One Man Killed In Store Blast At Carrollton

A fatal explosion in Carrollton Missouri leveled the Gamble variety store near the courthouse square. An 85 year old property owner was fatally injured by falling debris and a ruptured gas main. At least 12 more were hospitalized and eight treated and released. Local police reported a prior gas smell at the store.

Costs rise on U S 66 widening in Missouri

The Missouri State Highway Commission reports that extending seven miles of U S Route 66 through St. Louis County will cost 8,369,499 dollars. Chief Engineer Carl W. Brown notes 111.2 miles of Route 66 in Missouri have been improved since Jan 1, 1946, with maintenance costs rising each year from 1946 to 1949.

Farm Boy Is Given 15 Year Sentence

In Caruthersville Missouri a 15 year old farm boy, William Godsey, was sentenced by Judge Louis Schulz after pleading guilty to second degree murder for causing a train wreck that killed an engineer and injured a fireman. Godsey said he wrecked the train to see what would happen, hacking a lock and throwing a siding switch near Holland last July.

Brothers Hunt Rabbits Ends in Accidental Rifle Death

Melbourne Missouri reports 12 year old Gary Eugene Whitt was killed by an accidental rifle discharge from his 14 year old brother Elmer Wayne Whitt while rabbit hunting on the parents farm northwest of Melbourne. Coroner William Fuson confirmed the incident occurred Sunday.
