Federal narcotics agents and 35 detectives raided about 50 resorts in St Louis last night, arresting 45 men as part of a three month investigation led by Chief Inspector Joseph Whit ley. Twenty two prisoners were held, others released after questioning. Suspects ranged from wrecks in addiction to well dressed gangsters described as distributors in the district.

Gif ford A Cochran a wealthy social register and sportsman in New York was found dead in his Madison Avenue apartment hallway from an apparent heart attack. He was 50 and lived alone. His former wife was a Philadelphia society woman who later married Price Hohenloe.
The New York stock market fell again with rails notably weak as New York Central and rivals dropped to new lows. Industry favorites like Eastman Kodak and Cocoa Cola also declined while U S Steel and others shed around 2 points. Bears eyed November 10 levels but liquidity limited the downside.
Trenton N J Dec 5 AP The State Senate expelled Republican Ralph W Chandless of Bergen County by a 20 to 3 vote at 4 am after finding him guilty of conduct unbecoming a legislator. He allegedly used office for private gain by steering 200000 of state funds to Little Ferry National Bank to buy sewer bonds and was said to have received a 10000 fee from Lodi Township sewer contractors.
Mrs. Pearl O Loughlin described relentless police persecution after her arrest for the murder of her 9 year old stepdaughter Leona. She said officers grilled her for hours and Captain A T Clark urged confession, while she maintained innocence as the jury was kept from the testimony to decide its admissibility.
Buffalo reporter notes aviator William M. Griffin, once of Berea Ohio, died November 24 after takeoff from Buffalo for Cleveland. His plane wreckage was found in Chautauqua county hills buried in snow. Coroner cites likely instantaneous death from a deep forehead wound. Body to be returned to Canaqu an Howe for burial.
Senate in session through Monday with Interstate Commerce Committee reviewing power commission appointments. Agriculture Committee begins drought relief hearings. House opens treasury post office bill reading and Appropriations Panel considers a $150 million unemployment fund. Immigration Committee drafts further restriction plans and Fish Committee to hear Communist leaders.
A Rome confrontation between the Knights of Malta and the Ealestrian order of the Holy Sepulchre is sent to the Pope for settlement. Marquis Edward Persichetli Ugolini, nephew of the Pope, says Malta charges are unfounded and seeks papal review of the open quarrel.
Dec 3 Belgenland reports Prof Albert Einstein viewed a standard cod fish cake with bemusement and asked for a larger portion stating Germans are used to bigger meals. Frau Einstein translated the quip as a request for seconds while the scientist stayed in seclusion.
Grasslands Downs in Tennessee prepares for the Grasslands International Steeplechase. About 15 horses, American and foreign bred, will compete on a four and a half mile course with nearly identical layout to Liverpool’s Grand National. Governor John Goaurlay expects a 12,000 crowd at the 28 square mile estate.
In St Louis a federal court hearing on a case about selling grape juice intended to ferment into wine was postponed to December 23. Max Rader of California Grape Juice Corp was arrested November 12 on charges of selling materials for illicit liquor. Agents bought 10 gallons of grape juice under setup conditions.
William Foster, a Communist leader, refuses to disclose names of American Communist Central Committee members to the House Committee Investigating Communist Activities. He questions the panel and cites potential use against him in police court. He states the committee seeks to outlaw the Communist organization.
A speaker cited nine million unemployed and described wage cuts and overwork as stressing workers while accusing the Fish committee of shielding capitalism from protests. In Collins Missouri, 62 year old retired farmer W H Martin shot himself at home. Also noted is the birth of a daughter to Mr and Mrs S J Sommer of 308 Mulberry.
