Senator McMahon confirms a contract negotiation with Du Pont for hydrogen bomb work. The plan, to design build and operate facilities for materials for weapons or fuels, may involve up to 200000 acres. Site factors include proximity to towns water and power and defense against attack.
Washington reports a military view that Russia’s prewar stockpiling strategy aided North Korea by providing vast arms and supplies before the invasion. The theory holds Moscow mapped war plans, left surplus materiel, and helped North Korea mount a rapid, heavy assault despite anticipated U.N. and American responses.
East German ruler Walter Ulbricht denounces West Germany and South Korea as puppet regimes and vows to take over West Germany as Soviet forces push against Western imperialism. He calls for Germans to resist alleged American aggression and warns Konrad Adenauer would be a traitor if the Communists seize power.
President Truman asked Congress for an additional 950 million dollars for naval plane construction and procurement, to add to the emergency funds already approved amid the Korea outbreak. Lt Gen Stephen J Chamberlin of the 5th Army said new calls would be spread across the 6th Army area with at least five days before quotas are assigned to ensure orderly notification.
Johnson announced that hardship cases will be considered and that active duty calls for reserve guardsmen enrolled in educational institutions may be delayed until the school term ends. This applies across the Army Navy and Air Force composing the armed services.
A cashier and his woman assistant at the Sheraton hotel in St Louis were held up by a well dressed man who escaped with 727 dollars. The holdup occurred early today in the lobby as hotel staff and guests remained unaware of the crime.
A petition in involuntary bankruptcy is filed in U S district court against Ward Furniture Company with a subpoena served on R D Ward, the firm president. Three creditors filed the petition after an affidavit for attachment by the state attorney general. The suit follows several prior actions and default judgments entered by Judge Sam C. Blair. The petition claims Ward Furniture owes three St Louis firms about 4 900 for credit furniture from 1948 to 1949 and alleges acts of bankruptcy while insolvent in four months favoring some creditors. Blair had earlier ruled in favor of the other creditors for 3 193.94 plus interest.
Ten Jefferson City area youths enlist in the Army at local stations and bases. Enlistees include Richard L. Thrash of Chestnut Street plus Paul T. Jinks of East McCarty Street, with others from Eldon Iberia St. James Rolla and Columbia. Navy recruit Dorsey D Lilly visits with parents before returning to West Point for graduation next June.
American B 29 raids on Hungnam halted ammunition and war material production in the North Korean center. FEAF says 1,300 tons of bombs damaged 85 percent of buildings, labs, power plants and warehouses. The plants produced acids, nitrogen, nitroglycerine and chemicals for explosives.
Veterans at a local recruiting station can rejoin old units in Korea under a South Army order from Chicago HQ. Enlistments are accepted from veterans of the 1st Cavalry, 7th, 24th and 25th Indian divisions for reassignment to units they previously served with.

She credits the vitamin B1 B2 iron and niacin in HADACOL for improved weight appetite sleep and steady nerves. Boston Aug 4 AP Seventy eight Naval reservists were ordered to report for duty today in the first naval district but only 17 will appear. Dr George R Brown Jr of Wellfleet was given a 60 day deferment after requests from Wellfleet Truro and Eastham selectmen because he must deliver a dozen babies between now and October.
