The Missouri Annual Conference of the M E Church South met in Kansas City. Rev C A Lewis and Mrs A M Crandall represented Jasper. Nev L L Pinnell named to Jasper circuit. Nev C A Lewis to Purcell circuit. Correspondents urged to mail letters by Monday evening.
A Saturday night Republican meeting at City Park drew a splendid audience. Precinct Committeeman Bert Webb opened the event and introduced temporary chairman Dr. J. J. Martin. Dr. A. B. Clark of Joplin spoke as county chair, praising candidates and urging faithful service if elected. Joe J. Manlove, candidate for Congress, received commendation from Dr. Martin, then Judge Gray delivered a well known Republican address criticizing Democratic administrations. The largely Republican crowd listened with few Democrats in attendance, lingering until the end despite the cool evening.
A Hughes Manlove Republican club formed in Jasper last Tuesday night. N H Patterson was chosen president and EK Crawford secretary treasurer. About 20 members enrolled. The group will meet at the opera house next Wednesday night for rousing speeches. All Jasper Republicans and the community are urged to enroll, and older members are asked to provide names of likely young voters.
The delegates named Tuesday night to attend the Webb City convention include I. L. Crawford Walter Tabler Joe Smith Homer Bayne II W Scott Frank Crow A F Drake LT McCune Fred Norton F W Wescott W H Stark SW Crandall Bert Webb N Af Patterson Dr JJ Martin Geo H Johnson Arthur Teeter. Delegates will select a candidate to fill the State Senate seat left by a death.
Governor Major designates October 4 and 5 as good roads days. Commercial clubs road clubs farmers communities and road overseers urged to push road work and secure cooperation. Jasper mentioned as a place with potential impact if residents unite for action.
A Jasper area farmer appeals for readers to remain during crop failures, warning that those who leave incur heavy costs and often fail to find relief elsewhere. He recalls 1882 as the worst year and notes many who stayed prospered, while departures left behind thrifty neighbors who endured and recovered.
H J Faulkner of Jamesport Missouri bought 62 head of fine spotted Poland China spring pigs from T H Belland Bro and other Jasper and Burton County stocksmen. He will ship the pigs to his Jamesport breeding farm this week.
An old time Democratic speaking event is announced for Saturday evening. Speakers include Congressman P J Decker and Grover James of Joplin discussing issues with optimism. Champ Clark calls Decker the leading Missouri orator in the house.
Weather foreshadowed threats but the Sunday School convention at Jasper Christian Church drew a good crowd. Topics were reviewed by Ius I Campbell F C Wilkins and Miss Leighty. County officers listed include Mrs W Digger secretary Roy Bryant treasurer and group officers led by John W Spaid president J J Bowers vice president Mrs H T Peterson secretary treasurer. Births include a boy to Franke Watkins and wife in Jasper and a boy to Clarence Keith and wife near five miles northeast and a girl to St Jandas and wife near Smiles northwest. Republican leaders say Taft will speak in October with Sagher visiting the county. Commercial Club meets tonight.
