A young man named Albert Simmons stole a year-old bay mare, a rubber tired buggy, and harness from John Ward in Jasper County on Tuesday. Simmons, claiming Ash Grove ties, was later tracked to Nevada and Joplin, with authorities pursuing him. Ward and Moulton plan to recover the rig and offer rewards totaling 850 for the thief and detention of the property. Stakes rise as horse thefts spark local anger and police hunts intensify.
The Odd Fellows of Barton County plan a large meeting in Lamar on the 20th. The gathering marks the organization of the county into an appesociation and will include speeches, music, a picnic, a big parade, and a nighttime exemplification of the order in Subordinate and Rebekah Degrees with grand officers present. An invitation to Jasper Judge has been extended for a full attendance by members from nearby counties.
The death of Mellville A Mitchell on August 18 in Washington is announced by Editor Newsa. Born in Cedar County Missouri he spent most of his life in Jasper Missouri and later Washington. A teacher by vocation he served in Missouri and Washington and was active in temperance and Sunday school work. He recently served in the postal service but illness led to his passing. Surviving are his mother wife two daughters Mather 15 Ruby 13 and other relatives including Airs Isabelle Mitchells family. His pastor notes his influence and faithful church membership at University M E Church Seattle.
Groundkeeper James Danberry and Mrs. Florence Pook of Joplin were married on home plate during a Monday doubleheader between Joplin and Topelka. Judge Coon officiated as 100 dollars in change showered on the couple. It marked Danberry’s third marriage and second at a ball diamond.
Miss Melinda J. Torry died at 80 leaving a torn leaf will filed in Carthage. The will directs sale of Carthage property with 299 of proceeds to church work and charity. Clothing and remaining money to Clinton, Missouri relatives after a plain grave marker is placed.
Mrs I Lauderbaugh of the Preston neighborhood is visiting her sister Mrs Jake Byers at Fowler Kansas. The short trip highlights family ties and travel within the region.
West of the city farmers report a possible long bed of asphalt under their land after Kansas City capitalists led by W Phelps of Cartonge funded drilling. A hard rock layer 60 to 100 feet deep hindered progress but may be a fine asphaltum. If confirmed, a railroad from Jasper or Neck City could spur development benefiting Jasper and local landowners.
Zol Davis of Joplin was there the first of the week of business. He is making improvements on his farm north of town that will oust him altogether about 32,000.
