The Ninth Annual Jasper City Fair saw weak turnout aligned with county trends as farmers delayed travel for harvest. Livestock and poultry showed strength but space constraints limited displays. calls grow for a single roofed, free fair with livestock and farm product exhibits under one roof while excluding disorderly tents and gambling stalls.
Mrs Rebecca Hall known as Mother Hall in southwest Missouri died in her daughter Dr Elizabeth Hall Ketchums home in Carthage last Friday. A longtime church and W C T U worker she came from New Jersey and lived in Carthage many years. Funeral services were Sunday at 2 PM at First Methodist Church Carthage conducted by Dr EMP Anderson and Rev Dr W G Clinton with many friends present. Burial followed in the Mart Cemetery.
Steve Crouch, a prominent western Kansas citizen and former Barton County judge, died last Friday night at German Hospital in Kansas City after bladder surgery. He had been in poor health for years.
A large Jasper Democratic gathering in Nevada drew attention from many notable locals. Attendees included GC. L. Hayzlett, B. Shoopman, J. Gresham, F. I. Schooler, RK. FE. Cearnalig, J. Deardorff, T. Bearconey, D. Harbur, and Lauderbaugh, highlighting active party involvement.
Carthage Evening Press notes Dr Houser of Carthage rode to Jasper fair on Wednesday to judge a child baby show. The crowd doubted his expertise after ribbons were awarded, mothers convinced he knew nothing about it. The report hints he may linger around future events in town.
The issue notes three local weddings from the past week near Jasper. Wm Griffitts married Miss Mary Woodrow and Thad Yves wed Miss Almina Howe, both couples described as well known from areas east of Jasper. A third couple, Purl Richart of Carthage and Eloise Martin of Zion, also wed.
Rev Dr Martin and family attended the Old Soldiers and Old Settlers Reunion at Lamar on Saturday. Martin addressed the veterans in the morning and settlers in the afternoon, with J B Cline Amon Cline J B Lawson and Mr. Jose among Jasper veterans present.
State Board of Agriculture will attend the Jasper County Corn Show in Carthage on November 11, 12, and 13. Notable speakers Sam Jordan and other state lecturers will judge and lecture. Governor expected. Cash prizes for corn exhibits include 5 to 14 dollars per car in various contests. Entries free. corn should be packed in boxes or baskets for return after the show.
