The baby daughter of Clyie Wagner of Jasper area won first prize at the city show. The baby, the Madelite, will be shown again at Crawford on October 20 at 2 p.m.
The funeral for Marsh Deardorff, born December 11 1882 in Putnam County West Virginia, was held at the deceaseds Jasper area home. Rev C La Greacie preached the sermon as friends gathered, with music by a local quartet and pallbearers named by the family. Survivors include his daughter Mrs John Hartley, a son who died in infancy, his parents W J Deardorff and wife, four brothers and two sisters. The family extends thanks for support and kindness after his death.
Off for California H Beall and wife depart for a winter in a milder climate. He plans to see a brother in San Francisco after 20 years and visit daughter Mrs McCune in the San Joaquin Valley. A. M. Crandall and spouse begin a month’s trip visiting California, including daughter Mrs Wilcott in San Francisco.
A pair of Jasper boys walked a mile and a half toward Carthage on Monday afternoon after being put off a freight train by a conductor. They joked about the weather being too fine to ride and faced the walk with silent endurance as they approached Carthage.
Louis Gresham and Ruth Smelser wed at the Smelser home near Jasper on September 29 at 6 pm with Rev. C. L. Greene officiating. About 25 relatives attended a three purse luncheon after the ceremony, and gifts included cut glass, silver, linen, and china. The couple hosted a family dinner the next day at the Greshams with about 45 guests.
Special revival services will start next Sunday October 10 at Dry Mark Church on the baseline led by Elder Thompson from Garden City Kansas of the Church of the Brethren. The St Louis Conference of the MBE Church reports Rev Chitten was sent to Lamar and Ley with Martin returning to Jasper. Also Rev Crutcher to begin revival at the Christian Church October 9, inviting all, plus Baptist Church meets October 1 with services and a Sunday School Institute led by J S Chiravelle of Spring River Association. Dr J J Martin, Jasper church’s new pastor, to preach next Sunday.
Local readers recount a rough Saturday for Ford vehicles around Jasper. Chiarley Sullens needed towing near Carthage after a breakdown on the road. A sequence of breakdowns, delays, and roadside rescues involved Merl White, Fred Crandall, Rob inson, Glen Holmes, Joe Rice, W C Thoms, Ollie, Vom Uardaway, and others. Several cars stalled near Courytown store and at the courthouse town Dearreachers. Weather was cold and wet and residents note odd events on the roadside late Saturday night.
In a communication from Jasper Lodge A F and A M steps were taken to buy the remaining unsold portion of Jasper Cemetery. The plan aims to improve the grounds and ensure better upkeep in the future.
Jasper Masons visited the Alba Masonic Lodge Monday night with members riding in automobiles. Participants listed include Thomas T. B. Hardaway, Shoopman, Curr, Triplett, Crawford, Stark, Roberts, Patterson, Porton, and Hayzlett.
W. H. Ward and wife came back late week from Lima Ohio visiting Columbus to view the Ohio State Pair and on the way home stopped at Sedalia to see the Missouri State Pair. The News is taking subscriptions for the Kansas City Star Times Journal or Post.
