The News announces a Holiday Edition to be issued December 1 and urges readers and advertisers to cooperate. To keep on schedule some content may be printed a week or two early, reducing current news load for that issue. Correspondents are asked to submit news promptly and advertisers to provide copy. late ads cannot be held.
The notice urges people to drop pennies and a silver coin into Red Cross donation jars found on cigar cases in Jasper stores. It emphasizes that any amount helps the local chapter buy yarns and cloth for the boys overseas and that every little bit counts.
The week’s issue highlights the community’s financial growth with combined bank deposits reaching new highs. The Farmers and Merchants Bank reports several thousand dollars more deposits than ever before, while the First National Bank shows about $45,000 more than a rival bank in town, signaling broad economic strength.
The Carthage Chapter and 16 branches ready a Christmas drive to add 20 million members. W. I Logan named captain with lieutenants across Jasper County including Marion, Sarcoxie, and Carthage routes. Publicity chair A L Caulking led planning as Rev. McCaughtry spoke to 40 delegates. Naval recruiter C K Berkheimer toured Jasper urging enlistment before December 15 1917 to fill 2000 engineer positions and support ships on the Atlantic coast.
The Christian Church held a social Monday evening at J. A. Wine's in honor of Mr. Bredenkamp who is expecting his call to go to war soon. The home was decorated with American flags. After refreshments the crowd wished him a speedy return to their midst.
